Project Summary:


A team-based approach to care allows a team to coordinate around the needs of patients, bringing continuity and cohesiveness to the patient journey.

Involving other health care professionals in patient appointments, not only enhances services available to the patient, but also increases efficiencies and reduces redundancies for the patient.


BC Cancer is implementing team-based care across all six regional cancer centres in British Columbia by creating high-functioning and integrated care teams.

Each centre has launched at least one team-based care team where multi-disciplinary teams work jointly to assess patients' needs and plan future actions.

This specific project will focus on increasing the number of appointments for the oncology breast patient population attended to by a team-based care registered nurse and various allied health professionals.


Role Description:


The student intern will be brought into the regional Team-Based Care Steering Committee and various working groups to help move forward team-based care initiatives at BC Cancer Abbotsford.

Team-based care initiatives include supporting the development of tumor-based clinics in the Ambulatory Care Units.

Through supporting the development of the breast tumor group, it will be become the foundation of developing what team-based care looks like for other tumor groups including head and neck, gastrointestinal, gynecological, etc.


The student intern will directly support the project, revise and develop metrics to measure the success of the project, and act as a conduit between front line staff and leadership.

The student will also have the opportunity to strategize with the team on next steps, future direction, and propose new areas or methods of measurement.


Over the course of the internship, the student will learn about quality improvement, change management, cancer care, patient experience, and interdisciplinary teams.


Position Requirements:


  • Ability to work on a team of diverse stakeholders and to handle changing priorities and deadlines
  • Attention to detail and strong written communication skills
  • Basic knowledge of the health care system
  • Comfortable providing feedback and contributing to discussions about the project activities
  • Interest in learning quality improvement methodology
  • Experience collecting quantitative and qualitative data using surveys
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft office tools including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
You must be a current post-secondary student and located in British Columbia for the duration of the internship program (May - August 31, This project involves in-person work in Abbotsford, BC.


As per the current public health order, full vaccination against COVID-19 is a condition of employment with the BC Patient Safety & Quality Council as of October 26, 2021.
