***: Royal Ontario Museum is excited to welcome a skilled and passionate Conservator specializing in têxtiles for a six-month contract. In this dynamic role, you will be a crucial conservation team member, collaborating closely with our Senior Conservator in the têxtile lab. Your primary responsibility will be the meticulous preparation of Canadian quilts for an upcoming exhibition. This work will thoroughly examine, assess, photograph, and treat museum-owned and loaned têxtiles. The role demands high precision and decision-making skills, as you will play a crucial part in preserving the integrity and condition of these important cultural artifacts. Your ability to focus on detail and execute complex conservation tasks will be essential in maintaining and enhancing the value of our têxtile collection.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Demonstrate proficiency in proposing, executing, and documenting têxtile conservation treatments with precision and sound judgment.
  • Maintain detailed records of all conservation activities in both written and pictorial formats, including digital photography. Proficiency with word processing and database software, such as TMS, is essential.
  • Exhibit strong problemsolving abilities, good judgment, and initiative.
  • Work effectively within a team, displaying excellent communication skills and a cooperative, tactful approach in professional interactions.

QUALIFICATIONS:


  • A Master's Degree in Conservation, supplemented by a minimum of two years of experience in têxtile conservation or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Legal eligibility to work in Canada by the start of the contract.
  • Extensive knowledge of historic and modern techniques and materials used in têxtile and costume fabrication, understanding of deterioration processes, and conservation methods for these items.
  • Ability to plan and execute conservation treatments within strict budgetary and time constraints, ensuring the condition and appearance of têxtiles and costumes are maintained or enhanced.
