Position Description:


Under the supervision of the Workshop Manager, and working alongside a team of fellow Workshop Technicians, this role performs a variety of custom fabrication, repair and preventive maintenance work to ensure all galleries and exhibits, inside Science World and outside in the Ken Spencer Science Park are in safe operating condition at all times.

Workshop Technicians are expected to have a strong fabrication background. As part of maintaining and repairing an exhibit and/or gallery, the position will also perform related tasks and duties, such as wood-working, mechanical fixes, electrical, plumbing, painting and welding using a wide range of materials (e.g. acrylic, metal, wood, electronics, mechanical and electrical parts, etc.).


The position of Workshop Technician will appeal to someone who loves to exercise their analytical, diagnostic and troubleshooting skills to make things function better than they were.

You will work within a creative, collaborative environment where regular input from our team of educators, designers, and customer service staff is key to keeping your assigned gallery functioning at its best.


As a facility, Science World is generally open to the public seven days a week, with some extended evening hours in the summer months.

Typical office hours are Monday to Friday 8:30am - 5:30pm, with front-facing and operational teams also working a variety of shifts including weekends, holidays and evenings.

Hours of work and other related requirements will be scheduled according to business needs and this may include special events on evenings, weekends and holidays.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Perform daytoday maintenance and inspections to ensure all exhibits are functioning safely
  • Exhibit prototyping and fabrication as required
  • Setup and deinstallation of temporary exhibits and seasonal feature gallery exhibitions when required
  • Perform scheduled maintenance to ensure exhibits are maintained in accordance with manufacturer requirements and warranty guidelines
  • Perform preventative maintenance, cleaning mechanical and electronic systems
  • Perform various troubleshooting techniques related to system problems and/or malfunctions and take corrective action as required
  • Provide estimates for assigned projects that include materials, costs and completion timelines
  • Purchase tools and supplies; maintain inventory of materials and supplies commonly stocked in the Workshop
  • Operate, service, maintain and make minor repairs to all tools and equipment: clean, grease, adjust equipment as needed, sharpen and maintain hand and power tools
  • Operate machinery and tools in a safe and professional manner
  • Maintain accurate work orders, records and a clean, efficient work environment
  • Willingness to work some rotating weekend shifts with other Workshop Technicians
  • Perform other related duties as required to fulfill any changing business needs of this role

Qualifications:


  • A background working with Audio/Visual equipment is preferred
  • Able to read and understand blueprints and construction plans, as well as instruction manuals
  • An understanding of electricity, interpreting values on machinery and gauges
  • Must know how to follow safety procedures and practices in usage and storage of various materials
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships and function in a team environment with limited supervision
  • Must have proven troubleshooting and problemsolving skills. Must be selfmotivated, a fast learner and take initiative
  • Able to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, and be computer literate
  • Able to work in a physically demanding environment for extensive periods of time under a variety of adverse conditions (e.g. outdoors, standing, cramped spaces and wet environments). Must be physically fit and safely lift up to 35kg
