Job Summary


A large-scale digital transformation is in motion at CN to strategically modernize our core rail and intermodal business systems enabling improved operations execution, more rapid and cost-effective delivery of new capabilities, and enhanced decision support including autonomous decision making and real time data.

There is a need for strong business architects who have in-depth knowledge of CN Business with the analytical and strategic rigor needed to map it to a technology roadmap.

The role of the Expert Business Architecture is an exciting opportunity for those with the experience in the railway/transportation domain to define the business architecture for this large-scale business impact at CN.


Work with capability-specific business leaders to define the business architecture in terms of Why (strategy models), What (business capability model), How (value streams), Who (organizational models) and When (transformation models and roadmaps) to support the current and build the future business state and vision.


Using the above-mentioned artifacts and working with peer domain architects, the person identifies impacts and identifies the people, process, information, & technology changes required to reach the business capability's business objectives.


Main Responsibilities

Digital Transformation - Business Architectures

  • Build a meaningful business value focused and risk adjusted roadmap to strategically modernize 22 core rail & intermodal systems
  • Define the modernization opportunities (both strategic and tactical) and map the business value
  • Define current state business capabilities, analyze the usage of the capabilities today and build the target state business capabilities
  • Define a progressive transition roadmap to modernize the core rail & intermodal systems

Build Enterprise & Capability-Specific Business Architectures

  • Work with the capabilityspecific business leaders, define specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and timebound (SMART) business outcomes which will be used as a foundation to develop an initiative's business value
  • Produce business architecture artifacts (strategy models, business capability model, value streams, organizational models, transformation models and roadmaps)
  • Interact with product managers to understand capability challenges and to develop the capabilityspecific business architecture
  • Develop and maintain business capabilities of the enterprise in line with corporate strategy
  • Interact with solution / system architects to explain the business architecture and ensure understanding of the business outcomes
  • Define, document and communicate business architecture standards

Governance

  • Work with peer domain architects, define a comprehensive governance model to ensure solutions are developed according to the developed business architecture
  • Govern solution / system architecture and development to ensure alignment with developed business architectures
  • Define and enforce business architecture standards and controls
  • Manage business architecture dependencies between projects

Manage Relationships

  • Manage relationships & dependencies between different roles, business areas and external stakeholders
  • Educate and explain how business architecture aids in achieving CN's business strategy and delivery of the expected business outcomes
  • Educate and explain the purpose, value and use of the various business architecture models
  • Educate and influence I&T so everyone understands business strategy and outcomes
  • Be a champion for effective change
  • Continue to build an overall understanding of CN's business (capabilities, processes, organization structure, business lines, operations, etc.)

Requirements:


Education/Certification/Designation

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or information systems (or equivalent degree and experience)

Skills/Knowledge

  • Recognized as an authority for thorough understanding of one or more business capabilities
  • Good knowledge of business architecture best practices
  • Ability to produce business architecture artifacts such as strategy models, business capability model, value streams, organizational models, transformation models and roadmaps
  • Good knowledge of business process modeling
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt to change
  • Ability to understand complex probl
