The UTSC Library is a leader in academic library service and program development. The library supports research and study by housing an extensive network of scholarly materials in many formats.

The library offers an extensive reference and research service and holds a local collection of about 400,000 print items, journal subscriptions, sound recordings, videos and films, a leisure reading collection, special research and archival collections.

This position will collaborate extensively with various Library units in offering innovative and comprehensive solutions for a variety of Library initiatives.

Our core mission is to support the learning, teaching and research needs of all UTSC undergraduate and graduate programs.


Reporting to the Associate Librarian, Research & Digital Initiatives, your role as Digital Collections Coordinator is responsible for contributing to and creating special digital collections for the U of T Scarborough Library as part of the Digital Scholarship Team.


Working with a wide variety of library stakeholders, you will implement plans and process improvements for collections administration activities in the Library's Islandora Repository, as well as creating metadata and supporting digitization, description, uploading and performing quality control for digital objects.

You will also train and supervise casual employees as part of the library's Emerging Professionals program, in addition to supervising a staff-appointed employee.


Your responsibilities will include:


  • Implementing plans and process improvements for collections administration activities
  • Creating and updating catalogue records
  • Creating metadata
  • Keeping wellinformed on applicable copyright, access and privacy laws as well as new technology
  • Maintaining information on digital platforms
  • Creating and editing web pages with interactive media
  • Liaising with technical staff to resolve web management issues
  • Directing the activities of a single ongoing staffappointed employee and casual staff (in the Emerging Professionals Program)

Essential Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's Degree with a specialization in digital technologies or related degree, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum four (4) years' of related experience working in an academic library, archives or museum, including experience with metadata schemes, configuring digital asset management systems and content management systems.
  • Advanced computer skills with Microsoft Excel; metadata schemes (e.g. MODS, Dublin Core); configuring digital asset management systems and content management systems (e.g. Drupal, Omeka, Islandora). Intermediate computer skills with Microsoft Word and Outlook.
  • Demonstrated comfort learning new and evolving technologies at a quick pace
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage the development of collections objects and authority records
  • Experience supervising and providing direction to staff
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Working knowledge of Copyright, Access and Privacy Laws
