As the result of retirement, we have a new opportunity for a Community Recreation Manager to join our Community Recreation and Culture Services team Reporting to the Director Community Recreation and Culture Services, this position will focus on overseeing the community services team, community recreation programs at the Poirier Community Centre and the Maillardville Community Centre, youth programs at the Getaway Youth Centre, and older adult and seniors programs at the Dogwood and Glen Pine Pavillions.

This position will be a peer to three other Community Recreation Managers overseeing other areas of community recreation including community programs in Northeast Coquitlam, aquatics, arenas, fitness, and reception services, and to the Cultural Services Manager.

Combined, this management team oversees a large group of regular unionized employees and several hundred auxiliary staff to support recreation services across the City.


As the newest Community Recreation Manager, you will have the opportunity to set a vision and direct strategic and operational priorities in an environment with changing community demographics.

In this role you will be responsible for managing and maintaining relationships with community partners and a large group of staff to ensure the community is served with a wealth of community recreation programming.

This will be done by building and coaching strong, cohesive teams that take pride in providing excellent service to the residents of Coquitlam.

This leadership role is responsible for developing safety plans and policies, staff training, and will offer strategic input on how the City can continue to evolve its recreation offerings to better support the local community, as well as participate in the development of new recreation facilities.

Conflict resolution, change management and customer service skills, as well as experience managing budgets and a large complement of both junior and senior staff will be critical to success.

This is an exciting time to join our team as the City prepares to open new facilities and expand program offerings over the coming few years.

The successful incumbent will possess a university degree in Recreation Administration, or a related field.

In addition, a minimum of 3-5 years of related management or supervisory experience is required, including sound knowledge of the delivery of community recreation services, building community partnerships, the operation of community recreation facilities, strategic planning, people and performance management, customer service and budget planning and control, preferably in a unionized environment.

Key to success is the ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with community groups, advisory boards, and other partner organizations.

An understanding of facility operations and business services in major public recreation facilities is desired.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:


  • Experience developing and leading operational strategies and work plans;
  • Advanced customer service and problem solving skills, with an ability to identify and effectively communicate findings to a widevariety of audiences;
  • Experience in implementing policy and operational changes within a complex unionized environment.
  • Ability to adapt to a continually evolving environment centred around a teamfocused, fastpaced workplace design;
  • Track record of success in promoting and maintaining a work environment which fosters and rewards teamwork, collaboration, initiative, accountability, diversity and innovation;
  • Strong financial skills through experience managing budgets, analyzing expenditures and familiarity with the costs and framework of service agreements;
  • An understanding of the strategic direction of the City.
