As a key member of the Toronto Rehab Professional Practice Leadership Team, the
Interprofessional Educator is a clinical expert and resource to clinical programs, with leadership, staff development, quality improvement, and academic responsibilities.

The role generally oversees clinical and professional practice initiatives for the allied health disciplines, while also developing and supporting other activities related to patient care, education and research.


The Interprofessional Educator,** in consultation with operational and practice leaders, will work closely with clinical teams to: ensure compliance of health professions with professional regulatory standards; ensure integration of best practices and patient-centered care at the point-of-care; collaborate with others, such as Discipline Heads, to address issues related to allied health documentation, workload measurement, and education; facilitate interprofessional involvement in quality improvement, academic and research initiatives; support alignment of professional goals with the strategic directions of UHN and standards of professional regulatory colleges; maintain competence in, and promote, their own profession; support and liaise with other UHN internal stakeholders and external partners, as appropriate.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supports goals and objectives of TR Professional Practice and clinical programs:

  • Contributes to the development of practice priorities, goals and objectives aligned with both TR's and UHN's strategic plans
  • Participates in recruitment, orientation and training of allied health staff, as needed.
  • Communicates and disseminates relevant practicebased information to staff
  • Provides feedback to managers related to staff performance, as needed.
  • Adheres to UHN policies and procedures; facilitates a work environment that promotes civility and respect.

Facilitates quality provision of patient-centered care by health professions in accordance with established professional standards:

  • Ensures that patient care activities of staff are consistent with best practices.
  • Supports staff participation in clinical quality improvement initiatives.
  • Leads development and implementation of interprofessional practices and processes.

Ensures the efficient and effective functioning of all Health Professions through leadership and mentorship, in collaboration with practice and operations leaders:

  • Builds strong communication linkages with staff and other stakeholders, especially Discipline Heads, to help further profession-specific practices
  • Is a resource related to allied health workload measurement activities;
  • Contributes to program development initiatives
  • Participates in policy development or revision
  • Participates in sitespecific and corporate committees, as appropriate.
  • Develops, and maintains relationships with external partners such as academic institutions, to achieve established goals and to obtain or provide information.
  • Provides coverage for other practice leaders during absences, as required.

Delivers and participates in the development of professional education activities for staff and learners in conjunction with others:

  • Participates in development and delivery of interprofessional education, such as physical lifts and transfers education and annual professional development days, for example.
  • Assists with orientation of Personal Support Workers (PSWs), as needed.
  • Promotes continuing education, coaches and mentors others
  • Facilitates and supports scholarly activities such as academic appointments, teaching, academic lectures, publications, and/or research.
  • Role models own professional development through participation in conferences, independent learning, and advanced certification.
  • Supports supervision of allied health students, in collaboration with other leaders and educators.
  • Engages in other educational activities within TR, UHN, the University of Toronto, the community and professional associations, as appropriate.
