The opportunity:

This position is responsible for maintaining high standards for health and safety requirements, providing operational, technical service and support for the Edmonton Portfolio.

The primary objective of this position is to ensure that the assigned real estate portfolio is being managed and maintained in a safe and environmentally responsible manner and to the highest level of operational efficiency.

This role shall be responsible for ensuring the staff have an engaging workplace.


What you will do:


  • Ensure that Operational Health and Safety Regulation (OH&S) standards are adhered to and followed at all properties in the portfolio and implement any changes to OH&S requirements as per legislation.
  • Participate in National Committees as required.
  • Coordinate and lead the Joint Health & Safety committee for the Alberta region.
  • Develop and maintain a life safety program for each portfolio of properties and respective operations teams, contractors that is tailored to the needs of the asset and in compliance with industrystandard best practices for the type of asset being protected.
  • In coordination with Building Operations, adapt and maintain the BentallGreenOak National OH&S Policies for integration into daily building operations.
  • Coordinate and manage online employee national OH&S training programs.
  • Coordinate, scheduling and tracking of specialized training for staff.
  • Coordinate and participate in annual safety audits.
  • Understand building life safety equipment, fire extinguishers, P.A. systems, fire panels, etc. Also Ensure that contractors are able to operate necessary building safety equipment.
  • Develop, maintain, and implement an Emergency Response and Fire Warden program for each property that is appropriate for the particular property.
  • Schedule and host Fire Warden Training, Tabletop exercises; procedural reviews and updates.
  • Attend and assist in coordination of fire drills, including observations and debriefs.
  • Maintain/review policies and procedures manuals, log reports, files, occurrence reports, and fire and life safety reports. Ensure appropriate and complete documentation.
  • Respond to all incidents and emergencies as required. Coordinate and ensure investigations and reporting are completed as required.
  • Establish and maintain procedures that meet the needs of the tenants and owners for: access card programming; electronic access control system maintenance and upgrading. Ensure appropriate access control reporting procedures are followed. Also provide assistance to site operations to ensure they have proper support when dealing with site workstations.
  • Ensure all contract security officers and/or Building Operators are able to operate necessary building safety equipment.
  • Develop and maintain safety procedures for all contractors engaged to work within BentallGreenOak portfolio of buildings.
  • Ensure all properties have in place Safe Work Procedures and are being maintained.
  • Help Support the operations team on HVAC, mechanical, plumbing, lighting, electrical, elevating devices, and life safety systems.
  • Ensure all tasks are implemented and completed on a timely basis.
  • Assist with service agreements ensuring that service providers (e.g., HVAC, snow removal, landscaping, etc.) are meeting the requirements of the contract.
  • Support the corporate occupational health and safety program, ensuring that staff are trained and following the correct procedures.
  • Assist with development and maintenance of building manuals and fire plans.
  • Help with insurance and risk management inspections, remedial actions, and reporting.
  • Help manage and respond to environmental risks and hazards, conduct annual environmental assessments and reporting.
