The Unit


The Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (The Centre) is a faculty development unit that works in collaboration with faculty and graduate students to provide leadership, expertise, and support in fulfilling the teaching and learning mission of the University of Manitoba.

The Centre contributes to the practice and scholarship of teaching through guidance, collaborative problem-solving, and research with respect to teaching and learning effectiveness, curriculum planning, and institutional policies and infrastructure to optimize the learning and teaching experiences of students and faculty.


The Position

Responsibilities:


  • Cultivates and designs strategic actions that will advance teaching excellence at the University of Manitoba.
  • Acts as the principal strategist for teaching enhancement in relation to the University of Manitoba Teaching Excellence Framework and student outcomes.
  • Manages complex systems to monitor activities/initiatives as they relate to teaching excellence across the U of M.
  • Evaluates the success and efficiency of teaching excellence strategies and modifies as needed.
  • Works closely with members of the Provost's Office to plan out key steps to strategically advance the teaching excellence across the University.
  • Develops and maintains indepth knowledge of the University of Manitoba's priorities and needs related to teaching and learning.
  • Regularly communicates plans and progress against the teaching excellence goals to the Vice-Provost (Teaching & Learning) and Director, CATL.
  • Provides expert guidance in research and evaluation to generate evidencebased direction for teaching excellence across the U of M.
  • Conceptualize, lead, and evaluate Universitywide projects related to the teaching enhancement portfolio of the Vice-Provost (Teaching and Learning).
  • Provides strategic and tactical advice, guidance, coaching, and feedback for Faculties and Colleges developing strategic priorities across the University.
  • Collaborates with the Director, CATL, to assess CATL's impact on various stakeholders across the U of M.
  • Provides expertise in data management and interpretation to advise the Director of CATL on the development and modification of necessary policies, procedures, and activities.
  • Generates a culturally responsive assessment of teaching excellence at UM using multiple and diverse perspectives.
  • Conceptualize, implement, and monitor strategies to measure faculty engagement.
  • Designs and delivers workshops/training related to teaching excellence.
  • Conceptualize, lead, and engage in knowledge mobilization to distribute findings from related projects to various audiences within CATL, the UM, and externally (provincially, nationally, and internationally).
  • Maintains communications with key stakeholders on teaching excellence strategies, plans, activities, achievements, and progress against goals.
  • Represents the Vice-Provost (Teaching & Learning) and the University of Manitoba to external stakeholders and facilitates relationships between individuals, government agencies, industry partners, and key members of the community to assess needs related to teaching excellence and student outcomes.
  • Builds internal partnerships between students, faculty, and staff to advance the teaching and learning mission of the University.
  • Interacts and liaises with postsecondary institutions, all levels of government, national organizations, federal agencies, and international organizations and agencies to further the University of Manitoba's teaching excellence strategy.
  • Sit on internal or external committees and councils as designated by the Vice-Provost (Teaching & Learning) and/or Director, CATL.
  • Oversees the creation of funding proposals on behalf of the Vice-Provost (Teaching & Learning) and/or Director, CATL as required.
  • Manages the work of Research and Project Associates as required.
  • Independently recruits, mentors, leads, coaches, evaluates, and disciplines direct reports.
  • Establish tactics and priorities for research/development and evaluation projects, distribute resources to projects and implement plans for successful project completion.
  • Provides overall leadership for implementation and operations related to the University of Manitoba SoTL strategy.
  • Provides overall leadership for the regional SoTL Manitoba chapter soliciting engagement with all postsecondary institutions in the province.
  • Promotes collaboration with colleagues to engender trust and foster relationships.
  • Stay apprised of advances in higher education research and evaluation, and teaching excellence.
