Education Advisor - six months contract

Reporting to the Senior Education Advisor, you will contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of Save the Children Canada's education portfolio.

You will distill learnings to produce programming guidance and evidence on gender-transformative education programming, as well as contribute to compelling and innovative fundraising proposals.

As part of your role, you will follow industry developments and contribute to thought-leadership on education best practices, and maintain relationships with key players in the education, both in Canada and at the international level.

You will support and engage with technical staff from around the world in Save the Children's global technical working groups to strengthen global expertise and advance programming quality and innovation.

Travelling internationally may be required.


As part of the Gender Equality and Program Impact (GEPI) team at Save the Children Canada, you will also work cross functionally with our thematic experts and collaborate on strategic initiatives to strengthen gender transformative research and knowledge management systems and to achieve business development and advocacy goals.


Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):


  • Thematic Advisory and Technical Quality Assurance
  • Provide quality thematic support and advice to Save the Children program staff and partners, with a particular focus on strengthening quality results, shared learning and good monitoring and evaluation approaches in those offices where Save the Children Canada supports programming.
  • Ensure programs are using stateofthe art and evidencebased guidelines and approaches (including Save the Children Common Approaches) to improve learning outcomes and access to quality, inclusive and equitable education.
  • Train, mentor and build capacity of field staff, partners and government officials in education innovations and approaches
  • Contribute to good financial management of projects, particularly with reference to budget review and program analysis of expenditure, including variance analysis.
  • Establish and strengthen working relationships with multiple levels of government as well as local, civil society organizations. This includes working closely with the respective Ministries of Education.
  • Contribute to timely, complete and quality reports and other required documentation for donors as well as for internal processes of review, analysis, approval and learning.
  • Provide advice to Save the Children Canada projects to improve smooth implementation, monitoring and reporting, as per project contract obligations.

Advocacy & Business Development

  • Contribute to the development and review of concept papers, proposals, reports and other documentation, such as proposal risk analysis and cost pricing reviews. Support negotiation with donors, ensuring adequate charge offs for SCC.
  • Identify new funding opportunities for Save the Children Canada.
  • Advocate, within networks and coalitions for improved policy, policy implementation and resources mobilization in support of Save the Children Canada's strategic goals and areas of focus.
  • Represent Save the Children Canada in written contributions to agency newsletters and other publications, based on field knowledge and experience.

Program Learning & Innovation

  • Contribute to SCC education portfolio strategy and annual plan
  • Generate and disseminate evidence and learning on Save the Children's education programs and approaches
  • Represent Save the Children in relevant conferences and learning events to promote and share evidence and learning from our programs.
  • Contribute to the development and roll out of Save the Children International's Education Common Approaches, as agreed with SCC Senior Advisor for Education
  • Document information effectively, for use by others internal to SCC.
  • Promote crossfunctional synergies within Save the Children Canada, identifying, affirming and following up on opportunities by which Thematic Quality can interact effectively with other departments.

Qualifications & Competencies (include but are not limited to):

  • Completion of a Graduate Degree in International Development/International Education or a related field, or bachelor's degree in these areas with a post-gradua
