    Job Title: Senior Azure SQL Database Administrator

    Location: Toronto

    Role Summary

    The Senior Azure SQL Database Administrator will manage and optimize Azure SQL Database and SQL Managed Instance environments for enterprise financial-services applications. This role is responsible for ensuring high availability, security, and performance, while leading cloud migration initiatives from on-premises SQL Server environments to Azure. The ideal candidate will work across application, infrastructure, security, and cloud teams to maintain enterprise governance, audit readiness, and operational excellence.

    Key Responsibilities

    Azure SQL Administration & Operations

    • Administer Azure SQL Database and SQL Managed Instance environments.

    • Ensure high availability, security, and performance stability.

    • Configure vCore/DTU sizing, storage, backups, geo-replication, and failover groups to meet SLA and regulatory requirements.

    • Implement Azure AD authentication, role-based access control (RBAC), Transparent Data Encryption (TDE), auditing, and threat detection.

    • Monitor database health and performance using Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and Query Performance Insight.

    • Proactively resolve performance degradation and availability issues.

    SQL Server & Azure Migration

    • Lead end-to-end SQL Server migrations from on-premises to Azure.

    • Perform pre-migration assessments using Azure Migrate and Data Migration Assistant (DMA).

    • Define migration strategies (offline/online), coordinate cutover planning, and align downtime windows with stakeholders.

    • Execute migrations using Azure Database Migration Service (DMS), validating data integrity, schema consistency, and connectivity.

    • Support post-migration stabilization: query tuning, index optimization, resource right-sizing, and performance benchmarking.

    Governance, Risk & Cross-Team Coordination

    • Act as a bridge between application teams, infrastructure, security, and cloud architects.

    • Ensure migration activities comply with enterprise governance and change-management processes.

    • Maintain audit readiness through migration documentation, runbooks, and rollback plans in regulated financial-services environments.

    Automation & Continuous Improvement

    • Assist with automation of monitoring, reporting, and routine DBA tasks using PowerShell and Azure Automation.

    • Contribute to cloud cost optimization through right-sizing, elastic pools, and usage-based scaling.

    • Evaluate and implement continuous improvement opportunities in database operations.

    Required Skills & Qualifications

    • Strong experience as an Azure SQL Database Administrator.

    • Expertise in Microsoft Azure and SQL Server Database Administration.

    • Proven experience leading SQL Server to Azure migrations.

    • Knowledge of high availability, disaster recovery, security, and performance optimization in Azure SQL environments.

    • Experience working in financial services or regulated environments is preferred.

    • Strong problem-solving, communication, and cross-team collaboration skills.

    Experience Required

    • 8–10 years of relevant experience in Azure SQL Database administration and migration projects.
