JOB TITLE Heavy Equipment Operator

DEPARTMENT Public Works

REPORTS TO Public Works Manager or Public Works Foreman


JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for performing maintenance and construction work to municipal roads and drainage infrastructure, including equipment and building property.

This position requires the safe operation and servicing of a majority of the municipal maintenance and construction equipment. Assignments are received from a supervisor who monitors the work in progress for efficiency and adherence to safety regulations.

Minimal direct supervisory responsibilities are assigned to this position, but it is expected that guidance and direction beyond the work plan and task information will be mínimal.

The individual is required to operate hand tools, power tools, vehicles, a majority of heavy equipment and perform a lead role in the preventative and corrective maintenance on municipal equipment and buildings.


QUALIFICATIONS

(Educational)
Minimum Grade 10 Diploma is required
Grade 12 Diploma is an asset
Certification or training in First Aid and WHMIS 15 is an asset


(Experience)
Minimum of 3 years of experience in Transportation maintenance is required
Valid Class 1A Driver's license is required
Minimum 3 years of experience operating a grader is required


(Skills and Competencies)
Ability to operate and maintain municipal equipment (i.e. tractor, mini excavator, trucks, skid steer, grader)
Ability to operate/maintain a variety of small motorized equipment and standard manual tools
Ability to work with mínimal supervision is required
Ability to exert continuous physical effort
Ability to work outside in various types of weather and in conditions which may be muddy, wet, hot, cold and/or dusty
Ability to exercise care, follow safety procedures and wear appropriate safety equipment for public and own safety
Ability to gain additional training and/or education as may be required by the employer from time to time


DUTIES:


A PLANNING and ORGANIZATION 2%
- co-ordinate tasks under the work plan with available equipment and other conditions
- co-ordinate activities with your immediate supervisor
- complete daily road work report to the Public Works Manager or Public Works Foreman
- assist in capital works budget by providing a gravel and road report to the Public Works Manager or

Public Works Foreman
- complete time sheet daily and provide to the Manager at the end of a period


B SUPERVISION 1%:

- **some supervision of staff and/or contractors may be required in the absence of the Public
Works Manager or Foreman

C COMMUNICATIONS 3%
- maintain positive public relations with the public and refer questions to Public Works Manager or Public
Works Foreman
- attend safety meetings to provide input on operations and preventative actions


D OPERATIONS 80%
- operates trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, materials and supplies
- operates maintenance or power equipment such as, skid steer, 1⁄2 Ton, 1 Ton, tandem Gravel truck,
Tractor, Mini excavator, Grader, Belly Dump
- operates jackhammers, hotsey pressure washer and other small equipment and tools to maintain road and drainage systems
- performs routine inspection and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor
- hand wash vehicles as required
- cuts grass and trims weeds on RM property using weed trimmer
- paints interior and exterior walls and trim, using paint and painting tools
- drives truck and loads fallen tree limbs and roadside trash onto truck, and delivers refuse to landfill
- assists with maintenance of municipal roads, right-of-ways, and other municipal infrastructure such as:1) _

Paved Road Maintenance:
_ Pothole patching, crack sealing operations, seal coat operations, flagging and traffic control, including weed removal and surface repair.

General Road Work:
_grading roads, gravel retrieval, ditch pulling, road recovery/crowning, road construction.

Sign Maintenance:
_ removes and replaces damaged traffic signs
4) _Right-of-Way:_ Brush cutting, culvert repair and mowing.
5) _

Drainage System:
_ Clean and repair culverts, bridges and other structures. Aid in inspection of culverts and bridges.
6) _

Snow Removal:
_ Operates snow removal equipment to maintain roads and spreading salt and sand.

2) All leftover lunch, pop bottles, cans and general garbage is to be cleaned from the cab daily
3) Every Wednesday evening after fueling, the transmission oil is to be checked
