Position Overview:


The GIS Technician will support the development of a national database of barriers to freshwater connectivity (the Canadian Aquatic Barriers Database) and watershed connectivity planning in Canada by assisting team members with data acquisition, data quality assurance and control, and database population.

They will acquire, develop, and standardize a series of large spatial datasets from a diverse set of data sources.

They will work to maintain existing geospatial databases, compile new datasets, ensure a high quality of data is maintained, perform geospatial analyses, and support other team members as necessary.


Core Duties:


  • Identify existing databases of barriers to fish movement in Canada, including dams, culverts, and barriers to lateral connectivity.
  • Acquire, compile, and aggregate aquatic barrier data from multiple sources and a variety of formats into a standardized data structure.
  • Manage, update, and query existing geospatial databases.
  • Coordinate with team members to ensure data management and spatial analysis needs are being met to support project implementation.
  • Perform QA/QC of barrier datasets to ensure consistency and quality of data, and to remove duplicate data points.
  • Use geoprocessing tools to QA/QC hydrographic networks to ensure structural and topological compliance to facilitate network analysis.
  • Execute Python and SQL scripts to query data and automate processes.
  • Manage and update underlying data that supports webmap dashboards.
  • Support other Conservation team members, as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

_ Necessary_

  • Requires minimum postgraduate certificate in related fields (Biology, Environmental Science or Studies, Geography, Geographic Information Systems, Computer Science, Information Technology).
  • Experience managing largescale datasets (GIS, database management).
  • Knowledge of relational database management systems (RDBMS), including executing
  • Structured Query Language (SQL) scripts.
  • Experience performing basic spatial analyses with Geographic Information Systems (e.g., QGIS or similar software), including raster and vector datasets.
  • Experience producing highquality maps.
  • Strong English written and oral communication skills.

_ Additional Assets_

  • Demonstrated experience working with hydrological, biological, topographic, and land use spatial datasets.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL DBMS.
  • Experience writing SQL scripts for database management and data extraction.
  • Experience writing and executing code and scripts for data manipulation and spatial analysis in Python or other programming languages.
  • Conservation planning or freshwater ecology experience.
  • Ability to communicate in French.
