Job Description:

What you can expect in a typical day


We are looking for a Construction Planner to join our Refinery Maintenance and Construction team in Saint John, New Brunswick.

In this position you will be responsible for developing construction plans for the hundreds of projects that take place each year at our Saint John refinery.

You will develop a thorough understanding of project requirements and build plans in the safest, most cost-efficient manner. You know how to read construction related documents and are able to meet project milestones and deadlines.

Your strong attention to detail means you understand the impact of available human resources, fabrication of materials, and all the fine details that if missed, can derail a project.

Your roles and responsibilities:

  • Develop detailed job plans with safety as the #1 priority.
  • Define construction needs taking into account contractual requirements, project objectives, and procedures.
  • Develop detailed execution plans for projects in cooperation with Project Managers, Construction Leads and Field Coordinators.
  • Develop detailed work packages, using package development software, in cooperation with engineering and materials coordinator.
  • Facilitate meetings to present plans for review, comment, and gain approval. Identity risks. Use feedback to update plans as required.
  • Work with project team to develop scopes of work (SOW) for Supply management to issue contractor Request for Proposals (RFP's) and obtain budgets/estimates from suppliers
  • Conduct field site walks and reviews with Contractors for scope clarification and budget development in conjunction with Supply Management
  • Coordinate with contractors and IOR schedulers to develop and optimize a detailed resource loaded execution schedule to achieve project objectives
  • Drive constructability through early project phase engagement and supporting engineering development.
  • Work collaboratively with other planners on larger projects.
  • Collaborate with a Lead Planner to develop analytics as required by the Construction Manager or project controls team.
  • Perform field audits as required to ensure field conditions are aligned to engineering drawings.
  • Monitor and manage contract services to assist the execution team lead and procurement ensuring the services are being executed as expected.
  • Senior planners will provide coaching and mentoring to junior planners.


Professional skills- Commitment to safety as a core value.- Able to read and interpret P&IDs, schematics, and other technical literature.- Strong communication and relationship building skills to work with construction, turnaround, operations, maintenance, scheduling, and supply management teams.- Very strong attention to detail.- Strong analytical and planning skills.- Advanced decision-making, problem-solving, and leadership skills.- Knowledgeable processes for construction and shutdown projects.- Proficient with MS Office: Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint for reporting and presentation on work progress.

- Proficient with Oracle eAM, Primavera P6, and Adobe Acrobat

Education and experience- Post-secondary education in trades, construction, maintenance, or equivalent experience. Minimum of 5+ years working on-site in a heavy, industrial environment; refining preferred.- Construction project experience is a definite asset.- Experience planning for mu
