The Aboriginal Liaison position will contribute to the maintenance and development of productive and positive programs, services, and working relationships with Aboriginal communities as it relates to the College of New Caledonia.

The incumbent will work with Aboriginal Band Chiefs and councils, and other Aboriginal leaders, as well as supervisors in agencies, industry, and businesses, to design and create appropriate college programs and services.

This position will work under the guidance and supervision of the Regional Principal or their designate. This position will provide input to Aboriginal Education and Services.

Specific Duties


Building Positive and Sustainable Working Relationships

  • Liaise between Aboriginal communities and the college;
  • Provide an outreach service to Aboriginal communities;
  • Facilitate meetings with Aboriginal chiefs and councils, administrators and other Aboriginal members;
  • Encourage involvement of Aboriginal chiefs, council, elders, and administration in college activities and events;
  • Consistently represent the College in a professional manner;
  • Source out skillsets and qualifications of local Aboriginal peoples as it pertains to potential training/employment opportunities to assist in increasing local capacity for Aboriginal communities.

Research and Information Gathering

  • Solicit feedback from Aboriginal students to determine supports and ensure campus activities and programming are both relevant and culturally inclusive;
  • Gather ideas from Aboriginal organizations to ensure program relevancy and college responsiveness;
  • Assess industry and community training and education needs as it relates to Aboriginal student opportunities;
  • Gather and report data about emergent population, demographic, and educational trends;
  • Stay current with and in anticipation of educational needs for local Aboriginal populations.

Designing and Creating Programs and Services

  • Assist the campus in designing dynamic Aboriginal strategies and policies that create positive educational and service links between the college, Aboriginal bands groups;
  • Write indepth Aboriginal reports and position papers, taking into account emergent Aboriginal issues;
  • Codesign proposals with Aboriginal organizations and campus staff for college programs and services;
  • Assist with developing program budgets;
  • When required, negotiate proposals with funding partners and college partners;
  • Coordinate and provide guidance and direction for strategies that encourage Aboriginal student success.

Leadership

  • Help promote college programs and services to Aboriginal bands;
  • Present and participate at local, provincial and federal events relating to Aboriginal or educational issues;
  • Facilitate linkages and planning between Aboriginal organizations to integrate community offerings;
  • Provide direction, guidance, support and supervision to Aboriginal Education and Services;
  • Plan, organize and implement Aboriginal events where the college is involved;
  • Present ideas, success stories, and progress at College meetings;
  • You will be part of a team actively engaged in contributing to and accomplishing the vision, mission, and goals of the College and in supporting the aspirations and needs of our learners and communities;
  • You will promote a positive work atmosphere and communicating in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect with students and colleagues;
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Skills & Qualifications

  • 4 years postsecondary preferred with 2 years required.
  • Previous experience, minimum (3 years), working collaboratively with a variety of Aboriginal and nonAboriginal groups and organizations.
  • Indepth understanding of Aboriginal culture, issues, and social structure with firsthand knowledge of local Aboriginal organizations.
  • Selfdeclared leadership vision and understanding of how to motivate others.
  • Ability to communicate and/or understand local Aboriginal Dialect will be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (written and oral) with individuals and groups.
  • Strong conflict resolution, mediation, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to initiate actions in a politically sensitive environment.
  • Proven ability to work as an integral team member.
  • Ability to practice a learner/community/servicecentered approach.
  • Basic computer proficiency skills.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Able to independently handle a variety of special assignments while working in an often timesensitive, challenging and changing environment.
