The Indigenous Child & Youth Care Worker will assist in developing and implementing approved programs to best meet the prioritized needs of Aboriginal youth in the Nanaimo area.
The youth care worker promotes a healthy lifestyle, cultural awareness, respect, behavioral change and personal growth in aboriginal children and youth.

Qualifications:
- Grade 12 and Post-Secondary training in the Human Services Field, specifically in youth intervention; Therapeutic Crisis Intervention training
- knowledge of community services, resources, and systems
- demonstrated knowledge anduse of behavioral approaches in working with Aboriginal youth (eg. Peer Counselling Techniques)
- ability to take direction from, collaborate and work cooperatively in a team environment
- knowledge and/or experience in the areas of observing, recording and consulting
- a commitment to engage in in-service and training for personal development
- possession of own transportation and a valid driver's license, eligible for a Class - survival first aid training would be an asset, commitment to obtain the same
- food safe certification
Outline of Duties:
- organize and supervise recreational activities (eg., athletics, games, crafts, camping, outdoor education) with an emphasis on culture, socialization, and self-reliance
- ensure efficient daily operation of the Youth Drop In Centre including shopping, meal preparation, cleaning and maintenance
- assume responsibility of maintaining safety standards within the Youth Drop In Centre in terms of facilities and equipment, youth personal safety, volunteers and staff personal safety
- adhere to respective professional ethics and protocol related to the safety and wellbeing of children and youth
- maintain open communication with youth, parents/guardians, any affiliated organizations' staff
- strive to be a positive and effective Aboriginal role model
- maintain record and documents relating to Youth Centre activities, schedules, programs, and all confidential files related to youth social/emotional progress and growth, intervention strategies
- promote cultural growth and behavioral change in youth which will assist then in their development including social, personal and academic successes
- act as an advocate for the youth and family in conflict with any system
- promote life skills, social skills, and career programs to youth
- promote good public relations between the Youth Centre and other service infrastructures such as the School District, territorial First Nations and social service agencies
Salary:
$20.00 per hour

Schedule:
- Day shift
- Monday to Friday
- Weekend availability
Ability to commute/relocate:
- Nanaimo, BC: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)
