Role Responsibilities:


The speechwriter and communications specialist position is an advanced writer/editor role that reports to the Assistant Director of the Premier's Correspondence and Strategic Content Unit.

This position is responsible for drafting strategic, high quality and timely speeches for the Premier, and Ministers as required, while also providing communications support to special projects, as needed.

The writer and speechwriter is able to translate complex issues into effective communications. This includes ensuring government messaging is reflected in products to support government policy and direction.


Working with a large degree of independence, this position regularly consults with government departments and event organizers, conducts research, and drafts written products to meet both the needs of government and audiences.

In addition to speeches and communications project work, the writer and speechwriter may also write and edit:
Premier's correspondence, news releases, Premier and minister messages, video scripts and more.


The Position is responsible for:

  • Provide strategic and professional speechwriting to the Premier of Alberta
  • Liaise with communications branches and government departments to research topics and content for Premier's speeches.
- ensure content aligns with government priorities and messaging.
- ensure speeches and are effective and appropriate to the audience and public issues.

  • Provide effective writing and communications support to special projects.
  • Provide communications services for special projects, as needed
  • Draft news releases, key messages, question and answer documents, Premier statements, articles and other products, upon request.
  • Provide other writing and editing services as part of the Premier's Correspondence and Strategic Content Unit, which may include:
  • Draft and edit government news releases, Premier's correspondence and other communications products upon request.
  • Draft Premier's statements to acknowledge special days and events.
  • Effectively contribute to the Premier's Correspondence and Strategic Content Unit, and CPE
  • Contributes to process guides and documents.
  • Contributes to maintaining GoA voice, tone and style.
  • Mentors GoA writers on speechwriting and other products.

Qualifications:


University graduation in a related field such as journalism, public relations plus 4 years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described below.

Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.

  • Demonstrated experience in speechwriting
  • Ability to write creatively, conversationally and in plain language
  • Advanced consulting skills supported by strong interpersonal skills
  • Advanced planning, research, writing, editing and proofreading skills
  • Issues management, critical thinking and problemsolving skills
  • Understanding of the role of speeches in planning and issues management
  • Project management skills and the ability to meet tight timelines
  • Ability to work independently with mínimal supervision
  • Expertise in Canadian Press and Government of Alberta style
  • Experience in government communications with knowledge of GoA processes, policies, legislation and core business.
  • Coaching and mentoring skills
