Position Overview

Reporting to the ACAD Director and Associate Professor.

The DPF Operations Coordinator will work closely with the ACAD Director and Associate Professor and Senior research staff and to assist in the development of protocols and standard operating procedures.

The position will also include machining and prototyping work and be responsible for assisting with reporting on projects and budgets.


Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Take charge of the maintenance and operation of specialized equipment, including 3D printers, CNC mills, laser cutters, oscilloscopes, and waveform generators.
  • Provide SMEs handson guidance in CAD/CAM tools, data analysis software like Excel, Maven, and Mascot, and programming languages such as Python, C, C++, and MATLAB.
  • Responsible for sterilization process for medical plastics, adhering to stringent quality and safety standards.
  • Train lab members in laboratory techniques, including operating within a biosafety cabinet and executing sterile techniques.
  • Communicate directly with SMEs seeking prototyping work within our BSL2 space.
  • Under limited supervision and direction, develop, design, and fabricate prototypes for clients.
  • Produce proofofconcept reports for clients.
  • Attend and participate in laboratory meetings and professional development activities as directed by the senior research staff.
  • Assist in tracking projects and expenses for reporting to the manager(s).
  • Keep laboratory and work area clean and safe.
  • Establish and maintain effective, productive relationships with staff, peers and immediate supervisor.
  • Manage own time effectively and ensure immediate manager is kept informed daily/weekly of activities, progress of work, and any issues that require attention.
  • Demonstrate strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines.

Qualifications / Requirements:


  • A conferred Master's degree in engineering, reflecting a comprehensive understanding of advanced engineering principles and practices.
  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities, essential for effective collaboration within crossfunctional teams, clear project documentation, and concise reporting is required.
  • Demonstrated expertise in working within a Biosafety Level 2 laboratory environment, a thorough understanding of safety protocols, risk management, and adherence to biosafety regulations is required.
  • Competence in fundamental laboratory practices, including operating within a biosafety cabinet and executing sterile techniques with precision and consistency is required.
  • A proven track record in product development, showcasing the ability to take concepts from ideation to realization, while incorporating innovation and practicality, is required.
  • Proficiency in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) tools, demonstrated through successful project execution and design optimization is required.
  • Experience in both the operation and maintenance of diverse equipment, including 3D printers, manual and CNC mills, as well as laser cutters, to ensure precision and reliability is required.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the maintenance and utilization of crucial electronic instruments, such as oscilloscopes, waveform generators, and highvoltage apparatus, to ensure consistent and accurate performance, is required.
  • Familiarity with operating sterilization equipment and executing the sterilization process for medical plastics using Ethylene Oxide is required.
  • Adeptness with data analysis software, including Excel, Maven, and Mascot, evidenced by the effective interpretation and utilization of data to drive informed decisionmaking, is required.
  • Proficiency in various programming languages, including but not limited to Python, C, C++, and Matlab, to enable the development of custom solutions and efficient data processing is required.
  • While not required, familiarity with operating Mass Spectrometry equipment is considered an asset.
