Ophthalmic Technician (OT)


Job Location:
Primary clinic in Brampton, ON. Vaughan/Scarborough as needed


Job Summary:


The role of the Ophthalmic Technician (OT) at U Eye Laser Cosmetic is to provide dry eye diagnostic testing and patient care to support the Optometrists and Ophthalmologists.

They are responsible for offering excellent customer service to enhance patient satisfaction.


This person is instrumental in ensuring the quality of care of UELC/UES/UOptical patients and must work effectively with staff members to create a unified workplace.

They will need to be able to exercise independent judgment and work as a team member with the UELC/Uoptical and UES staff members.


Responsibilities

  • Initiate patient evaluation, documenting the chief complaint, history of present illness, review of systems, and all pertinent ocular findings accurately and in accordance with compliance guidelines.
  • Perform preexam testing to include visual acuity assessment, including pinhole and glare testing, confrontational visual field testing, assess extra ocular muscles, pupillary evaluation, tonometry, assess angles, pupillary dilation, and all other patient services as requested by the physician including specialty tests such as color vision screening, stereopsis, dry eye testing, and exophthalmometry.
  • Perform lensometry and specialized testing such as visual fields, keratometry, A/B scans, and ophthalmic photography optical coherence tomography (OCT), Optical Biometry (IOL Master and Lensstar).
  • Perform retinoscopy and refractometry. Assist with minor surgical procedures or laser treatments in the office.
  • Completing dry eye assessments, preoperative and postoperative diagnostics and counseling, including, history taking, VA's, lensometry, refraction, IOP's, slit lamp exam, and TBUT's.
  • Assist with fitting contact lenses and instruct patients in care and insertion of lenses.
  • Counseling patients on refractive surgeries, dry eye treatments, cataract surgeries, blepharoplasty, botox, general eye conditions and health.
  • Organizing procedure schedule, booking patients procedures (ZoHx, DEL, PRP) and coordinating with OD/nursing team.
  • Providing refractive/dry eye support for postCE-IOL patients upon MD request.
  • Complete dry eye testing for our cataract dry eye program (CDEC), suggest dry eye treatment before cataract surgery.
  • Complete requests for prescription refills as authorized by physician, with full documentation in patient chart.
  • Educate patients regarding administration of medications and pre
- and post-operative instructions as directed by physician.

  • Check temperature of medical refrigerator daily.
  • Check expiration date and inventory of culture plates, media, etc., kept in refrigerator and replace, as necessary.
  • Maintain inventory and order diagnostic medications and supplies.
  • Conduct inventory of instrument supply on a regular basis.
  • Assist with maintenance of clinical examination equipment and with ordering of supplies.
  • Clean surgical instruments in preparation for sterile processing. Inspect instruments periodically for damage, send for repair, and request a replacement, as necessary.
  • Open and close exam lanes daily, ensuring that equipment is wiped down in an appropriate manner, battery powered instruments are seated properly in recharge wells, slit lamps and projectors are switched off under covers.
  • Follow all safety procedures as per guidelines.

Competencies

  • Certified Ophthalmic Technician.
  • Skilled in performing diagnostic tests.
  • Able to perform all aspects of ophthalmic testing, i.e. refraction, IOP's, pachymetry etc.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Excellent customer service and sales ability
  • Competency in OSCAR (EMR) Software
  • Competency in Microsoft Office.
  • Organized with attention to detail.
  • Alignment with company values.

Education & Experience:


  • Bachelor's degree or diploma in the field of ophthalmology/optometry/optician
  • 12 years of experience in high volume & fast paced ophthalmology practice

Working Conditions:


  • Computer use, sitting, standing

Daily Schedule & Shifts:


  • Monday to Friday
  • 9:00PM to 5:00PM
  • Weekend: (If required)
  • 9:00PM to 5:00PM

Job Status:
Full Time, contract (1 year)
