Description

Sturgeon County is looking to fill a temporary seasonal Research & Policy Officer position within the Corporate Planning & Intergovernmental Services department.

This is a 30 hour/week (4 days) opportunity that will be up to 16 weeks in duration, ending September 1, 2023.


This position will focus primarily on researching and identifying best practices related to the delivery of corporate planning and government relations municipal processes.

The Research & Policy Officer will also review current related Sturgeon County documents, studies, and other critical planning documents. Additionally, the position will assist with general policy recommendations or support other elements of the County's strategic priorities.


This position is partly funded through the Canada Summer Jobs Grant to create quality summer work experiences for young people aged 15 to 30 years.

Job Duties:

Undertake research relating to municipal best practices within a strategic management framework.

Complete a review and analysis of County planning documents currently in place.

Review various County reports, studies, and policies to identify stated actions that relate to advancing critical corporate initiatives.

Develop content contributing to reports and presentations on municipal best practices.


Work with a team to support the creation of materials required to develop new policy frameworks, such as briefing notes, PowerPoint presentations, and other communications.

Contribute to developing carefully considered and clearly articulated administrative recommendations to present to the County's Leadership Team for consideration.


Assist the Manager of Corporate Planning and Intergovernmental Services (and other team members) in planning and implementing projects and supporting service delivery.


Job Qualifications & Skills:


Priority will be given to those who are currently enrolled in a related program at a recognized post-secondary educational institution.

Ability to provide exceptional internal and external customer service in a consistent and professional manner.

Strong written communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to conduct policy research and solid analytical skills.

Experience working both independently and in group settings.

Basic computer knowledge of Microsoft Office products.


Ability to provide and maintain a home-based office as a condition of employment, with the ability to work from the Sturgeon County office or travel outside of the community, when required.

Valid Alberta Class Five driver's license is required.
