  • Reporting to the General Counsel, the Legal Assistant will provide confidential legal administrative and _
- secretarial support to the Legal Services department. Working as part of a team, the Legal Assistant will _
- prepare confidential legal documents, manage communications between parties related to litigation, _
- maintain lawyers' calendars and schedule meetings. _


Summary of Duties:

Provide confidential, legal administrative/secretarial support to an in-house legal team;
Prepare/compose a wide variety of correspondence, reports, documents;
Prepare confidential legal documents such as affidavits and pleadings and related forms to be used in

tribunals and courts;
Assemble and copy exhibit books and other court documents;

Receive and triage inquiries from principals and managers for legal advice and support;
Manage calendars for in-house counsel;
Liaise with external law firms;
Maintain document filing systems and database of all on-going litigation and general advice files;
Maintain complete, accurate files and tickler system with cross-referencing as required; including archival

materials;
Provide leadership in fostering equity and inclusiveness in the development and implementation of

programs and services; and
Provide backup/support to other Assistants; and
Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

Two year college diploma in related field (e.g. Office Administration - Legal, Law Clerk) which includes

courses on procedures for a legal office, computers, communications with three years of progressively
responsible experience handling a broad range of administrative matters in a legal office environment, or
an equivalent combination of education and experience;
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with staff, union
representatives, legal counsel, community, parents, and internal/external organizations;
Demonstrated ability to handle matters requiring high levels of diplomacy, sensitivity and confidentiality;
Demonstrated ability to deal with difficult situations and to take appropriate action in stressful situations;
Demonstrated ability to work under pressure in order to meet frequent deadlines;
Excellent proof reading skills;
Ability to take minutes/notes and to transcribe dictation;
Prior experience tracking expenditures;
Demonstrated ability to organize and co-ordinate a diverse number of projects;

Knowledge and understanding of related legislation and court/tribunal rules of procedure;
Demonstrated ability to prepare accurate reports and summaries;
Experience managing confidential information with discretion
Knowledge of records management programs and records-retention schedules;
Proven ability in promoting equitable practices which value inclusiveness and diversity;
Ability to take initiative and work independently; and
Flexibility to adapt to a changing work environment.


Special Requirements:

Some travel across TDSB to various meeting locations (e.g. TDSB work sites, Union/Federation sites,

tribunals, court).
Must be available to work evenings and weekends sometimes with mínimal or no notice. Periodically

this may be for extended periods.


Location:5050 Yonge Street and at a satellite office in downtown Toronto.
