    Description

    The Locomotive Heavy Duty Mechanic will work independently or in small team environments repairing and servicing various types of locomotives. The work is in field environments and may require travel away from the home for periods of time. Cando Rail & Terminals operates a fleet of primarily EMD locomotives in our switching and short line railway operations. These industry proven locomotives use diesel powered electrical generators to supply traction motors the force required to move rail equipment. Various control and safety systems use mechanical, relay and contactor electrical equipment, and pneumatic systems to control movements and operate equipment safely.

    Roles and Responsibilities

  • Inspects locomotive, diagnose issues, make recommendations as to course of action and repair/recondition as needed
  • Performs all types of preventative maintenance services on locomotives and other Cando equipment
  • Tracks all inspections and repair/maintenance work performed; completes all required logs
  • Establishes daily and weekly schedules for locomotive maintenance and repair
  • Maintains and cares for all work areas, vehicles, and tools used to perform the locomotive and equipment servicing
  • Provides quality customer relations; interfaces with operations teams on site
  • Interfaces with the operations teams on site
  • Promotes and guides others to understand the daily requirements to effectively service and maintain locomotives
  • Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Ability to independently plan, organize, and prioritize workload
  • Understanding of materials purchasing, inventory management, and basic accounting practices
  • Ability to lift/push/pull a minimum of fifty (50) pounds and to maneuver in/through/around equipment easily and safely
  • Ability to carry out production planning and meet Workplace Safety & Health standards
  • General computer skills with ability to learn new processes
  • Hold and maintain safety critical medical status including clear drug and alcohol testing; valid driver's license is required
  • Ability to hold and maintain the safety and rail certifications required to access various sites
  • Ability to work indoors/outdoors in all weather conditions with tolerance to fumes and odors
  • Willingness to address emergency service problems at any time of day or night
  • Education and Experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years' experience in locomotive electrical and mechanical repairs and maintenance
  • Experience working in heavy industrial environments and with similar equipment
