Job Summary

The UBC Men's Health Research Program's

) knowledge mobilization strategies include web, social media and bibliometric strategies to reach researchers, clinicians, policymakers and the public with men's health promotion information. The Communication & Design Coordinator is a great opportunity for an individual who is keen and motivated to contribute to various aspects of communications and information design and production within a research environment.


The role provides:

  • Research and administrative support.
  • Leadership in knowledge translation, including the translation of research and scientific concepts to communicate complex ideas and processes visually through social media and web, and the dissemination of curated content related to men's health on web and social media.
  • Graphic design services to brand specific outputs drawn from and promote events hosted by the Men's Health Research Program.
Organizational Status

This position reports directly to the Research Coordinator (Dr. Nina Gao), with some guidance from Dr. John Oliffe, Professor and Founder and Lead of the UBC Men's Health Research Program

Work Performed

Research Duties- Conducts preliminary literature searches and reviews- Develops knowledge translation tools based on research produced by the research program (i.e., articles, blogs, social media content)- Contributes to the development and production of a high volume of data-driven reports and presentations

Social Media Management- Creates and implements marketing, event promotion and social media strategies and campaigns, including content ideation and design, and implementation schedules for the Men's Health Research Program's social media platforms (i.e., Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn)- Grows the program's social media influence into new social media platforms while increasing the presence on existing platforms including Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn- Reports interaction data bi-annually in recommending adjustments

Website Management- Manages Men's Health Research Program's website, including graphic design, updates and maintenance- Reports web analytics bi-annually in recommending adjustments

Supervision Received

Receives training and supervision. Works collaboratively toward project deadlines. Work is directed by Dr. Nina Gao and reviewed by Dr. John Oliffe for accuracy and adherence to procedures. Works within established project parameters.

Minimum Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum four years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications- Strong project management and organizational skills- In depth knowledge and understanding of social media platforms and their respective audiences (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, etc.) and how they can be deployed- Ability to effectively and accurately communicate information and ideas in written and verbal format- An interest in men's health, population and public health communications and experience working collaboratively with community-based organizations and health researchers is desirable- Computer experience and training required include Adobe Creative and Production Suites (including Acrobat, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro and After Effects); Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Outlook- Intermediate to advanced Excel skills preferred- Experience with content management system required and experience with HTML, CSS, and spatial data considered an asset- Education/training in research or demonstrated experience working in a research environment preferred- Effective oral and written communication, prioritizing, multi-tasking, interpersonal skills- Ability to be thorough, accurate, and have a high level of attention to detail- Ability to work both independently and within a team and to work effectively to meet deadlines- Proven ability of assimilating, analyzing and presenting information to a variety of audiences- Proven active interest in and knowledge of infographics a
