This path aims to refine your abilities in postpartum and neonatal assessments, as well as in patient education, thereby enhancing the overall care experience for families in our labour and delivery unit.

    About this team:
    The Labour and Delivery Unit is a tertiary level care centre in Toronto. We deliver approximately 6, patients and their families each year. Our patients are antenatal and perinatal. We provide both low and high risk obstetrical care. Our space is comprised of birthing suites, 7 Triage beds, 5 Operating Rooms and 5 ODU beds within an Obstetrical Day Unit (ODU).

    In this role you will:

  • Demonstrate the College of Nurses of Ontario Entry to Practice Competencies for Registered Practical Nurses
  • Possess the requisite knowledge, skills, judgment and attitude to deliver competent and evidence-based nursing care
  • Meet the nursing professional standards and exercises judgment for providing safe, competent and ethical nursing care
  • Demonstrate accountability and responsibility for your decisions and actions and practices within your own level of competence
  • Determine the need for and initiate consultation and collaboration with intra and interdisciplinary team members including Registered Nurses in a timely and supportive manner
  • Continuously gather and analyze clinical and other relevant data to evaluate the effectiveness of the plan of care and adjusts the plan as needed
  • Work collaboratively with patients, families, caregivers and the interdisciplinary healthcare team
  • Provide health education using effective teaching strategies that takes into account the patient/family's learning needs, readiness, and motivation to learn
  • Contribute to discharge and transition planning and other planning activities to facilitate care continuity and coordination; advocate for care needs to be met in most appropriate setting
  • Provide supervision and mentorship to nursing learners and new staff
  • Utilize critical inquiry, critical thinking and research to develop evidence-informed practice and inform decision-making
  • Develop expertise in your area of practice through self-reflection, self-learning, specialty certification and implementation of best practice guidelines.
  • Be committed to patient safety and quality responsibilities in accordance with hospital vision, policies and procedures
  • Contribute to achieving Sinai Health's strategic and operational priorities through a commitment to continuous quality improvement, patient/staff safety, professional development and continuing education
  • Contribute to Sinai's work by participating actively in hospital committees and other groups to represent the RPN perspective
  • Job Requirements

    Mandatory

  • Current certificate of registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
  • A diploma or equivalent from a CNO-approved practical nursing program. Applicants in their final year or near completion will be considered
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification
  • Infant feeding Course & Infant feeding skill; applicants not currently enrolled in an Infant feeding program may be considered – as a condition of hire the Infant feeding course must be successfully completed within three (3) months of hire
  • Preferred

  • Previous postpartum and/or operating room experience; consideration for hire may also be given to nursing graduates who have completed their practicum consolidation in Women's and Infants' Health
  • Active Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) provider status. Applicants not currently NRP certified may be considered. This program must be successfully completed within three (3) months of hire
  • Experience using an electronic health record
