Ballard Power Systems is actively seeking a ) to join the Materials Engineering team in the Product Engineering department on a permanent basis. The successful applicant will lead work on metal technologies in the company, evaluating new fuel cell materials sourced from various global suppliers. They will also interface cross-functionally to integrate qualified materials into next generation fuel cell products. Responsibilities:
  • Lead the material selection and qualification effort involved with developing metal components for next generation fuel cell products.
  • Develop standards, test protocols, and processes associated with the evaluation of metal components, including corrosion.
  • Manage cross-functional material selection projects, taking them from requirements definition all the way to implementation.
  • Develop technical requirements documents that enable materials to be sourced from global suppliers, and ensure these materials can be qualified for next generation fuel cell products.
  • Use standardized tests and techniques to characterize metals (e.g. mechanical testing, corrosion testing, NDT, microstructural analysis)
  • Oversee the creation of data sets that can be used by Product Engineers as model inputs for performance models, FEA and predictive life calculations.
  • Perform data analysis and link observations to underlying material science.
  • Follow sound engineering practices regarding material specification documentation, document control, change management and failure investigations. Improve products through the application of sound engineering practices, such as 8D problem solving and FMEA.
  • Ensure that selected materials meet all Ballard requirements, including conformance to industry standards such as REACH, ROHS, etc.
  • Interface effectively with Research, Supply Chain, Quality and Manufacturing to resolve technical issues to support the development of fuel cell products.
  • Support ongoing Supply Chain development and ensure quality standards are being met (IATF, ISO, etc.).
  • Qualifications:
  • Relevant degree in science or engineering (e.g. Metallurgy, Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering).
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the field of metals and metal coatings.
  • Knowledge of production processes associated with metal components, such as stamping, welding, and coating.
  • Expertise in the field of corrosion is strongly desired.
  • Working knowledge of thermoplastics, thermosets, elastomers, composites, and materials science is as asset.
  • Experience with quality management systems.
  • Industry experience on materials composition as well as material supply chain from raw material manufacturers, compounders and processing companies.
  • Hands-on experience of material sample preparation and materials processing.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills required.
  • Working knowledge of fuel cells stacks or systems is desirable.
  • Ballard values diversity in the workplace and is committed to Employment Equity. We encourage applications from all qualified candidates.
