Work Schedule:

The successful candidate will be work Monday to Friday days, with flexibility required for evening and weekend availability when required. Schedules may change based on needs of the role. 

What we need:

The Health and Safety Advisor will be an integral member of our dynamic Occupational Health & Safety Department and will work closely with all departments at the hospital providing expertise through consultation, program development, implementation and evaluation. You will be responsible for the development and administration of processes to ensure hospital–wide compliance with safety legislation including: Emergency planning, conducting needs analyses, environmental investigations, ergonomic assessments, health and safety programs and policies, and health and safety training.

Liaising with federal and provincial authorities and organizations (PSHSA, MOL, WSIB) in working towards a safer workplace. •

 Designated management contact for the Ministry of Labour regarding Health and Safety.

  • Coordinates responses to Ministry of Labour orders, including developing a work-plan drafting briefing notes to Senior Leadership Team and Board of Directors as required and ensuring action plans are delivered within specified timelines.
  •  Responds in writing to the Ministry of Labour as required.

  • Manages the hospital Mask Fit Test program, including conducting the test, tracking compliance and following up with out-dated or absent tests.
  • Provides education and training on appropriate PPE use, including donning and doffing support. • Supports the Workplace Violence Prevention program.
  • Manages WHMIS/GHS MSDS database/internal inventory of GHS products
  • Prepares Health and Safety presentations and training, safety advisories, brochures and other material to raise hazard awareness and provide ongoing Health and Safety education.
  • JHSC, Wellness, Accessibility and Emergency Planning, and others as required.

  • Ability to facilitate, coach, mentor and lead individuals/groups to achieve quality outcomes and provide exceptional service.

  • Highly motivated with the ability to adapt quickly to new situations/challenges
  • Demonstrated appreciation and respect for protocol, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Ability to work efficiently independently and in a teamwork environment
  •  Preferred • Certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention is an asset; The Health and Safety Advisor may be required to provide first aid coverage in the department when required.

    What you bring to MSH:  

  • Completion of a diploma or certificate program in Health & Safety; Canadian Registered Safety Professional (preferred)
  • 4- 6 years previous related experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of health and safety programs
  • Data collection and statistics experience
  • Extensive knowledge of relevant legislation
  • Knowledge and application of adult education principles
  • Current Standard First Aid Certificate an asset
  • Previous training experience including the development of training packages and strategies with knowledge of creative training techniques. Experience with e-learning programs an asset
  • Proficient in MS Office, specifically PowerPoint and Word
  • Motivated, self-directed and the ability to function effectively with autonomous work habits
  • Well developed communication (oral, written, and presentation) and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills; able to set and adjust priorities
  • Previous related experience in a health care or private industry setting
  • Demonstrated good attendance and performance records with the ability to maintain these same standards
  • Demonstrated commitment to a healthy and safe workplace for self and others (staff, patients, families, etc.) by taking all reasonable precautions and working in compliance with hospital related policies, health and safety legislation and best practices and completing relevant mandatory education as required
