    At WSP our Environmental Compliance team is currently seeking a Senior Environmental Compliance Specialist to join our us in the Greater Toronto Area and provide day to day oversight of the team. This position will provide you the opportunity to manage a small growing team of specialists, oversee contractor regulatory compliance, review and comment on contractor deliverables, manage contractor and client expectations, and conduct environmental audits and inspections of contractors. We are looking for motivated individuals who can demonstrate proven experience excelling in these key areas.

    The position requires knowledge of Construction Environmental Management Planning (EMP) and implementation, Environmental Control Plans (e.g., Waste Management Plan, Spill Prevention and Response Plan, Erosion and Sediment Control Plan, etc.), Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Environmental Monitoring, Canadian and International Best Management Practices (BMPs) for environmental protection during construction, and ISO 14001 principles (including auditing).

    A day in the life:

  • You will be overseeing a team of specialists from both a people leadership and technical quality standpoint, including operational items such as project controls, key performance indicators, performance management, and coaching
  • You will oversee and review Contractor’s regulatory compliance throughout construction to ensure that environmental requirements are established, implemented and maintained across all construction site activities;
  • You'll oversee Contractor’s environmental monitoring, inspections and audits. You will review and act on monitoring results, site inspections and audits to ensure that the Contractor’s environmental requirements (contractual, permitting, approvals, etc.) are being implemented;
  • You will assess the environmental impacts associated with Contractor activities, and development of the appropriate environmental responses, including advice on remedial actions;
  • You can expect to support Contractor response activities related to environmental advice, non-compliances, environmental incidents, etc.;
  • You'll review and comment on Contractor’s environmental deliverables, including EMP, ECPs, method statements, monitoring reports, progress reports, schedule, etc.;
  • You will be in attendance at regular Contractor meetings, and may chair environmental meetings as required;
  • You'll track incident investigations, audits and environmental impact assessments, including the corrective actions, root causes, and preventive actions recommended / taken to ensure closure in a timely manner;
  • You'll be actively communicating internally with all employees on the project, other disciplines and departments, and externally with the Client, Contractors and Government Agencies;
  • You may prepare the necessary elements for technical presentations and participate in client meetings.

  • A related Science or Environmental degree;
  • A senior level of progressive EMP and compliance experience, preferably in the environmental consulting industry and/or working for a Contractor;
  • Experience in Construction Environmental Management Planning and implementation, Environmental Control Plans, Environmental Impact Assessment, Environmental Monitoring, Best Management Practices for environmental protection during construction, and ISO 14001 principles;
  • Direct experience in the field evaluating and assessing Contractor environmental performance for large construction projects;
  • Strong personal time management capabilities, with excellent communication and team relation skills;
  • Exceptional writing and report organization abilities with a proven ability to prepare comprehensive documentation for issuance to regulators and the public;
