The Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in the area of mathematics education to join the “Transforming Mathematical Identities” project team. The Research Project—Transforming Mathematical Identities: The Potential for Collective Learning to Create Free Spaces for Mathematics is led by Professor Jo Towers(UCalgary), in collaboration with Professor Brent Davis(UCalgary) and Dr. Lyndon Martin (York University). The project is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

The overarching goal of this project is to address the high rates of disaffection among learners of mathematics in Canadian schools and the related shying away of qualified students from mathematical (and related science and engineering) studies at the post-secondary level. We are engaged in designing and studying a radical school-based intervention that will recruit students who have (self-identified) poor relationships with mathematics and rebuild those relationships in order to transform students’ mathematical identities. Our aim is to study how disaffected students might be afforded the space to build a different relationship with mathematics, re-form their mathematical identities, and mobilize beyond themselves to serve as catalysts in the wider school population. The successful candidate will participate in all facets of the project and take an active role in co-authoring publications based on the findings of the research.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will assist in the development of knowledge, practice, and policy to advance mathematics education in Canada. You will actively contribute to the intellectual life of our School by:

• pursuing team-based and independent research activities

• presenting and co-presenting research findings at national and international scholarly conferences, workshops, and other professional meetings

• publishing research findings (as sole-author and co-author) in well-regarded journals

• assisting with drafting grant applications as well as conference and manuscript submissions

In addition, you may (subject to agreement with the faculty mentor):

• assist in development of events and activities that relate to your research project and interests

• attend and participate in training opportunities related to your research interest and career direction

• provide guidance to graduate student researchers, where appropriate


  • Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent in Mathematics Education or a related field, awarded within the 3 years immediately preceding the appointment, and must complete all degree requirements before starting the appointment
  • Candidates must propose a well-defined research study that closely aligns with the funded research project—Transforming Mathematical Identities: The Potential for Collective Learning to Create Free Spaces for Mathematics
  • Prior research work must be supported by a strong record of peer-reviewed publications, evidence of familiarity with conceptual debates, and strong methodological skills.
  • The applicant should be motivated and possess excellent communication skills with the proven ability to work co-operatively with colleagues from a range of different disciplines
