Position Description


The Nursing Resources Unit (NRU) is currently seeking ten (10) part-time, permanent Registered Practical Nurses. As a member of the NRU, the Registered Practical Nurse will successfully complete a competency-based orientation and be expected to apply and maintain practice based competencies throughout all clinical assignments. Reporting to the manager of the NRU, you will be expected to provide safe, high quality nursing care competently and ethically in clinical situations involving clients, and their families, across the lifespan. As well, you will be expected to engage in ongoing and structured learning through the NRU to achieve this goal. As a staff RPN with the NRU, you will be on-boarded and cross-trained to work across all clinical inpatient areas: Emergency/Acute, Forensics/Rehab, Dual Diagnosis/Geriatrics and Youth/Emerging Adult. As a member of an interprofessional team, you will provide client-centered mental health and addictions, as well as general nursing care. In addition, you will ensure the security and safety of the inpatient unit to which you are assigned, and practice in accordance with professional regulatory standards, CAMH Policies and the CAMH Professional Practice Model. You will be accountable for knowing and recognizing your competence level (knowledge, skill and judgment) when making decisions and providing care to clients. This includes making decisions to collaborate with registered nurses or other team members when your competence level may not meet client care needs. Your skills include the ability to make behavioral observations, perform ongoing assessments including physical and mental status assessments, monitor the client’s response to pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions, develop, implement and evaluate interprofessional client-centred care plans, and effectively communicate with other team members. You will support and contribute to a healthy workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork, and complies with all applicable regulatory and legislative requirements. This position involves shift rotation and weekend work. This position is located at the Queen Street and College Street sites.

Qualifications
The successful candidate must be a member in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario. A current B.C.L.S. (CPR) certificate is also required. The ideal candidate must have medication administration certification or have completed a Registered Practical Program diploma program that included medication administration. You will have one year experience in psychiatric/mental health nursing or have 3 month’s psychiatric/mental health nursing experience through the New Graduate Guarantee Initiative. You will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills enabling you to develop Nurse-Client relationships and work within a collaborative and diverse interprofessional team. Demonstrated psychiatric nursing experience with individuals with a developmental disability and/or serious mental illness is considered an asset. Preference will be given to candidates who possess a strong knowledge of psychiatric nursing and addiction issues. Candidates will have demonstrated ability to intervene effectively in acute clinical situations requiring crisis intervention and behavioural management techniques. The successful candidate will be a self-directed team player who is highly organized and has the communication and interpersonal skills that enable them to work within an inter-disciplinary collaborative team environment. Experience working with individuals from diverse ethno-cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds is also required. Computer literacy is required. Bilingualism (French/English) or proficiency in a second language would be an asset.

Salary Range: $27.70 - $33.07 per hour
