THE OPPORTUNITY :

We are recruiting for a General Manager, Planning & Process Assurance to be based out of our Campbell River office in British Columbia, with responsibility for a number of operations on both Vancouver Island, as well as the mainland coast requiring some level of travel. We are currently working in a hybrid work environment. Expectations for the time being are that this role will be working from home and will also be within the office with proper safety plans in place.

The General Manager is responsible for managing the Timberlands Operations Planning and Process Assurance Programs. This includes delivering safe, timely, sustainable, margin-driven, cost effective annual harvest plans as well as leading business process re-designs, with a focus on streamlining and standardizing key business processes and increasing operational efficiency.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works with the GM Timberlands to create and maintain a safe work environment through proactive Timberlands and Operations level initiatives designed to build a culture of accountability and awareness, relentlessly focused on identifying, actively managing and wherever practical, eliminating hazards;
  • Builds and maintains an effective and collaborative Operations Planning organization, supporting cohesive, productive Operations and clear succession opportunities;
  • Ensures the importance of Indigenous Relationships are recognized amongst the Operations Planning group; promotes and participates in initiatives designed to enhance such relationships;
  • Provides direction to the Operations Planning group on harvest planning criteria based on sustainable forest management targets and in consideration of corporate margin expectations;
  • Facilitates development and implementation of sustainable forest practices in the Timberlands Operations in concert with the Director of Forest Inventory and Stewardship;
  • Builds and sustains a margin focused Operations Planning group, keenly aware of the impacts of productivity, the influence the Planning group has on phase costs and the opportunities to secure value from our tenures;
  • Utilizes extensive experience to foresee and address in advance, internal and external obstacles to timely, efficient harvest operations aligned with forecast production and margin expectations;
  • Considers and manages business risk through effective controls and risk-based investment of working capital, employing technology and innovative solutions wherever possible;
  • Works together with the VP Timberlands, GM Timberlands and Timberlands Operations Managers to develop and update harvest production and financial forecasts;
  • Establishes and cultivates relationships with key senior District and Regional agency staff to facilitate communication and understanding of Western and government perspectives on policy and regulatory issues impacting Western and the industry;
  • In concert with the VP Fibre Supply, ensures awareness of current and evolving stumpage and waste related regulatory requirements amongst corporate and operational level Timberlands staff; drives efforts to communicate and implement improvements in the related systems and to negate and mitigate illogical and costly changes; ensures optimized application of appraisal opportunities;
  • Works cooperatively with VP Timberlands, GM Timberlands and Senior Timberlands staff in coordinating wildfire preparation and response.
  • Based on a deep understanding of the Timberlands business, investigates and designs a strategy for the development and enhancement of business processes, including change management aspects;
  • Leads the standardization of ‘Global’ operating procedures and manages the ‘Local’ operating procedure exceptions;
  • Manages projects of a complex nature. Develops project scope, plans and secures required resources, schedules and tracks activities to ensure time commitments are met and creates the change management strategy to ensure changes are adopted and understood;
  • Works with stakeholders to design, develop and deliver training programs and documentation in support of the new or revised business process; ensures that employee competency requirements as identified are directly linked to business processes and training programs.
  • QUALIFICATIONS

    Education and Experience

  • 10 + years of experience in Timberlands Operations and Planning in increasingly responsible roles;
  • Post-secondary degree in Forestry or related degree is considered an asset;
  • Exposure to utilizing Six Sigma and Lean methodologies to drive process improvements;
  • Proven experience in managing cross functional teams in the safe execution and implementation of process improvement projects;
  • Eligibility or accreditation with the Association of BC Forest Professionals is considered an asset; and
  • Business and financial management post-secondary training or equivalent experience preferred.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to quickly recognize issues and opportunities to improve processes and drive efficiencies;
  • Strong ability to lead process enhancement activities;
  • Excellent collaboration, communication and influencing skills; and
  • Ability to motivate and engage staff to perform at a higher standard.
