Echocardiography is the use of highly sophisticated ultrasound technology for the evaluation of cardiac anatomy, function and hemodynamic. The Cardiac Sonographer utilizes equipment using comprehensive specialized education and accepted protocols to obtain diagnostic recordings of cardiac ultrasound images and doppler hemodynamic data with indirect supervision from the cardiac physician. The incumbent evaluates and records pathological findings, obtains measurements and calculations, then prepares a summary of the findings which is later reviewed by the Echocardiologist for final reporting. The results of exams are discussed with the Echocardiologist using PACS and recorded information; maintains accurate patient files; records appropriate and timely information in the computer; maintains a professional attitude; and practices good patient care at all times. Specialized sonography skills, clinical knowledge and experience are necessary for providing advanced practice service to the adult congenital population, tertiary and surgical programs, research programs and the clinical training for residents and student sonographers.
