INTROSenior Legal Counsel required by CNL, Canada’s national nuclear laboratory and waste management and remediation corporation, to be a strategic partner providing support to CNL’s major projects. Responsible for managing legal matters and bringing appropriate resources to meet CNL’s legal needs, either by doing the work her/himself, with support as required from other members of the CNL Legal team and/or other CNL SMEs and/or bringing in external (primarily legal) resources. The fundamental guiding principle of the position is to provide practical legal advice while appropriately balancing risk and opportunity.DUTIES Provide advice to project teams, management and executive members on legal issues, with a special focus on issues relating to procurement and contracting with suppliers for large, complex or strategically important projects. Sr. Legal Counsel will provide procurement and claims expertise to CNL’s Supply Chain, Decommissioning and Waste Management and Projects organization in the procurement of construction, engineering and other services required for major projects.Lead the formulation, negotiation, legal review of procurement and contractual documentsDrafting and providing advice on the drafting of procurement and contractual documentationFormulating strategy for successful contracting with suppliers on large, complex, or strategic procurementsProcurement Strategy and AdviceProvide legal support to CNL’s Supply Chain organization throughout the procurement lifecycleidentify and participate in the implementation and management of proactive approaches to procurement in order to prevent or mitigate legal risks for CNL in the procurement processAdvise on creating and maintaining procurement processes that are fair, accessible, open, competitive, cost effective and transparent;Help devise strategies to result in "best value" to CNLProvide legal support to CNL’s Contract Administration staff throughout the project lifecycleProvide leadership on issues of dispute avoidance in the management of contractsAssess and provide advice on minor contractual disputes or claimsManage and negotiate significant commercial claims and legal actions QUALIFICATIONS Practicing Lawyer, Member in good standing with Law Society within CanadaAt least 8-10 years post call experienceExperience in large construction and infrastructure projects (owner side preferred, but supplier side acceptable) and contractingSound knowledge of procurement law and purchasing and business best practicesDemonstrated experience and sound judgment to analyze, recommend and initiate changes in contracting processes and proceduresA solid understanding of business fundamentals and a proven ability to make decisions and provide legal advice to ensure project decisions are made for sound business and legal reasons.Effective communication skills required to lead, coordinate and contribute to discussions and presentations within a large complex matrix organization.Effective analytical skills are required to lead dispute resolution efforts and to manage litigation.Construction, procurement, and/or infrastructure requiredCommercial and business development beneficial #LI-POST
