Description:Travel Requirements (Due to the nature of the job):The candidate must be available to travel the same day or overnight in Ontario, as required.For this role, travel to school board locations across the province will be required.The candidate will work with the school boards and local public health units to ensure all required COVID-19 safety measures are followed when on-site at schools.Travel expenses will be reimbursed according to the Ontario Travel, Meal and Hospitality Expenses Directive.The Specialized IT Consultant, Level 3, role requires extensive knowledge of network infrastructure and network connectivity technologies with demonstrated hands-on experience analyzing, configuring, implementing and troubleshooting software-defined networking (SDN) solutions in the Ontario K-12 school board environment.This resource is responsible for, but not limited to:Providing subject matter expertise, advice, consultancy, training and implementation guidance with software-defined networking (SDN) – software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN) including Fortinet, Meraki, Palo Alto, and Aruba.Providing technical guidance and training on VPLS/MPLS/IS network transition to SDN.Providing implementation guidance, and hands-on troubleshooting and configuration of network data monitoring and management systems including SolarWinds, FortiManager and Panorama.Troubleshooting, providing analysis, and recommending solutions on complex network performance issues using network performance management tools and other network troubleshooting/performance benchmarking techniquesNetwork performance management tools include SolarWinds, Wireshark Network Analyzer, PRTG (Paessler Router Traffic Grapher), and NetFlow.Performing network load testing, preparing test plans, completing the testing analysis, and risk assessments to ensure sound network architecture using load testing tools including Micro Focus LoadRunner and LoadsterConfiguring, installing and troubleshooting network hardware including modems, switches, routers, and servers.Configuring and administering network protocols such as MPLS, VPLS, and VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP).Providing subject matter expertise for the design, development and delivery of technical training courses on SDN, NTDM, NG-SEC architecture and products to support boards’ broadband modernization implementations.Supporting public sector I&IT staff and Ontario K-12 school boards through the implementation and transition to operations of their SDN solution.Presenting to various stakeholders, as needed.Deliver on other duties as assigned.Provide status and project status reports on other deliverables assigned.This work involves working in close partnership with K-12 education sector technical IT leads, telecommunications providers and network technology vendors to develop customized approaches and implementation plans.To support project outcomes, the resource must be available to perform hands-on configuration, troubleshooting and training at the Ontario K-12 school board sites (schools).Therefore, the resource must be available to travel the same day or overnight in Ontario, as needed.The manager will have the right to assign additional work, directly or indirectly related to this initiative as needed to support unit priorities as and when required.Skills:Network Technology (40%):5+ years’ hands-on experience with network infrastructure solutions and technologies including LAN/WAN, VPN, VLAN, and hardware (servers, switches, routers, firewalls).2+ years’ hands-on experience with Ontario K-12 school boards’ networks (WAN, LAN, Wi-Fi, internet service delivery). 2+ years’ hands-on experience with software-defined networking (SDN, SD-WAN), in particular, Fortinet, Meraki, Palo Alto, and Aruba – preferably for Ontario K-12 school boards.2+ years’ hands-on experience in data monitoring and management systems, in particular, SolarWinds, FortiManager, and Panorama – preferably for Ontario K-12 school boards.2+ years’ hands-on experience with network data traffic awareness, monitoring and analysis tools and technologies, including SolarWinds, PRTG (Paessler Router Traffic Grapher), and Wireshark Network Analyzer – preferably for Ontario K-12 school boards.2+ years’ hands-on experience with data logging mechanisms and technologies including Syslog, IPFix and NetFlow – preferably for Ontario K-12 school boards.2+ years’ hands-on experience configuring, troubleshooting, and administering network protocols such as MPLS, VPLS, and VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP).Hands-on experience performing network load testing, testing analysis, and risk assessments to ensure sound network architecture – preferably for Ontario K-12 school boards.Providing subject matter expertise for the design, development and delivery of technical training courses and demonstrations on SDN, NTDM, NG-SEC architecture and products to support Ontario K-12 school boards’ broadband modernization implementations.Demonstrated experience assessing and evaluating new and emerging network technologies with pilots and proof-of-concepts.Public Sector Experience (35%):2+ years’ hands-on experience working with Ontario K-12 school boards, in particular with school board networks.Hands-on experience supporting the public sector I&IT staff and Ontario K-12 school boards, through analysis, design, and implementation.Hands-on experience providing design, development, and delivery of technical training courses to Ontario K-12 school boards.Experience coordinating multi-disciplinary and diverse teams with public sector and Ontario K-12 school board IT, business and external stakeholders.Coordination Skills and Experience (10%):Strong communication skills as demonstrated through:3+ years’ experience in effectively presenting to management teams and external stakeholders.3+ years’ experience in preparing written materials (e.g., status reports, recommendations, briefing notes).Industry Certifications / Relevant Degrees (15%):Relevant vendor certifications or equivalent work experience.Preferred but not mandatory – Degree / Postgraduate degree (e.g., M.Sc. and/or Ph.D.) in computer science or engineering, or similar discipline.
