JOB DESCRIPTION Duties: As per IBEW Collective Agreement. * Performs maintenance on the protection, communication, and control systems in BC Hydro; including equipment used for detecting and responding to power system faults, controlling system devices, and data and voice transfer throughout the province * Installs and maintains substation equipment, as well as generator control systems, excitation systems, and governors * Installs and maintains protective relaying equipment for detecting and responding to power system faults, and control equipment including scada systems and programmable logic controllers * Installs and maintains a variety of telecommunications equipment including microwave, power line carrier, very high frequency/ultrahigh frequency radio system equipment, teleprotection, telephone, and supervisory control & data acquisition equipment * Analyzes fault records to verify equipment performance, oversees testing of plant equipment, and writes technical reports * Commission and performs acceptance-test for new and upgraded equipment installations * Reviews and maintains drawings associated with protection, control, and communications systems * Programs, sets up, installs and maintains distribution automation equipment (e.g. reclosers, Vista switches). Qualifications: * Completed a National Diploma Program in Electrical (Power Option) and/or Electronic (Communications Option) Engineering Technology or a Diploma or Degree of Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution. * Completed a Training or Apprenticeship program in Protection & Control; Telecom or CPC at a BCH-R-6638-210401E1 - Communications, Protection & Control (CPC) Technologist (Various locations) NB 51046638 - NC 51046639 North American Utility within the last 10 years; or have at least 3 plus years Telecom, Telecontrol and/or P&C field experience working on the BC Hydro Transmission and Distribution System and/ or that of a similar Electric Utility, which would include but not limited to trouble shooting, commissioning and maintenance. * Fluency in verbal and written English is mandatory * Strong computer skills required * Demonstrated physical ability to perform all the necessary duties of the position as well as normal color vision * A valid British Columbia Driver's license - Class 5 (or the ability to obtain). ADDITIONAL INFORMATION This position is affiliated with the international Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union (IBEW local 258) * BC Hydro has CPC Technologist positions available across the Province - this posting is specifically for hard to fill locations. * Some remote locations are eligible for remote incentives between 6 and 20% and travel incentives * A strong commitment to safety is required * In addition to being able to function successfully in a crew environment, the ideal applicant would also have proven experience of independent work and problem solving skills * Substation, hydroelectric generation, and thermal generation experience will be considered an asset. * The work is highly technical, involves sophisticated systems and equipment, requires a mechanical aptitude, and it appeals to those with good analytical skills who are also creative problem solvers * Field work out of town, including remote camps and other remote locations, is a requirement * Float plane, helicopter, and wintertime travel to mountain top and other worksites is a requirement * A condition of employment for this job is that you maintain your Driver's License: Class 5 * BC Hydro conducts pre-placement medical checks of applicants entering certain positions to help safeguard BC Hydro's workplace.
