Your opportunity

Dillon's Planning & Design group is looking for a Student Planner to work with our multidisciplinary team of professionals within our Alberta/North Community Planning & Design group, located in the Yellowknife Office . You will have the opportunity to work on new and exciting projects while providing clients with a fully integrated and superior customer experience.

Responsibilities

What your day will look like

Planning (100%)

  • Assist with planning assignments related to community and regional land use planning (Community Plans, Zoning Bylaws, Area Structure Plans, and other regulatory land use plans)
  • Assist with project research and coordination related to a variety of projects for Indigenous governments
  • Prepare agendas and schedules, record meeting minutes and write memos for community and stakeholder meetings
  • Develop, coordinate and participate in public and agency consultation program
  • Contribute to Indigenous Traditional Knowledge Studies
  • Contribute to Indigenous Community Engagement
  • Contribute to business development activities including proposal preparation, client meetings and presentation
  • Work closely with clients, including Local Governments and First Nations, to build effective working relationships and respond effectively to requests.
  • Travel for work duties to communities within the Northwest Territories (possible by plane)

  • Qualifications

    What you will need to succeed

  • Completed at least the 2nd year of a post-secondary program with a focus on Planning, Human Geography, community development, or a similar field
  • Valid driver's license
  • Strong writing skills; proficiency in report and plan writing
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
  • Critical and strategic thinker
  • Responsible, organized, accountable, and committed to excellence on all levels
  • Versatile and adaptable with ability to work in a self-directed, multidisciplinary team setting
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Able to travel and work with communities' throughout northern Canada including the Northwest Territories and Nunavut
  • Experience

  • Length of Employment

  • May is preferred start date, however Dillon understands there may be more complications with moving this year and is flexible and willing to work with candidates timelines
  • The ideal candidate would be available for a minimum of 8 months with consideration of extensions to 12 or 16 month terms. Some flexibility is possible to ensure that the work term is compatible with academic terms and requirements such as co-op requirements
  • Hours and Pay

  • Schedule is based on standard workweek of 37.5 hours
  • Approved overtime will be paid in compliance with local employment standards and regulations
  • Rate of pay is between $21 - $23 an hour (paid bi-weekly which includes allowance for vacation pay and payment for statutory holidays)
  • As an interim employee, you will not be entitled to company benefits beyond what is legislated
  • Relocation Requirement and Expenses

  • You agree to relocate to Yellowknife by the start of your official employment with Dillon
  • The Government of the Northwest Territories requires everyone entering the territory to complete a 14 day self-isolation in an approved location )
  • Dillon will assist with complete the isolation plan and cover the costs
  • To offset your relocation expenses to Yellowknife, Dillon agrees to cover your reasonable moving expenses actually incurred up to an amount of $500 (supported by legitimate receipts and/or it may be possible to have your relocation expenses billed directly to Dillon)
  • Should you voluntarily end your employment relationship with Dillon Consulting Limited within one year of your relocation date, you agree to reimburse Dillon, on a monthly prorated basis, for the above described relocation allowance and you expressly authorize Dillon to deduct such amounts from your wages or any other amounts owing to you provided such deductions are in accordance with applicable employment standards legislation
  • Housing
