    Occupational Health & Safety Specialist

    The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), the largest airline pilot union and the largest non-governmental aviation safety organization globally, is looking for an Occupational Health and Safety Specialist for our office in Ottawa, Ontario. ALPA represents over 77,000 pilots at 41 airlines in Canada and the United States. The Occupational Health & Safety Specialist is responsible for coordinating the delivery of services by the ALPA Canada Pilot Groups and their Committees including, but not limited to, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and ALPA's Air Safety Organization (ASO), including Pilot Assistance. They collaborate with staff and appointed Committee Chairs to maintain regular communications with the Directors, ALPA Canada, Engineering and Air Safety, and Committee Chairs, aligning the services of the Committees with ALPA's strategic aims and objectives.

    They provide input on legislative initiatives related to Aviation Occupational Health and Safety Regulations and may prepare testimony for presentation in Ottawa. Additionally, they represent member interests in industry participation groups such as the Canadian Aviation Regulation Advisory Council (CARAC).

    Working together with their department management, colleagues, and members of the ASO, they strive to advance ALPA's policies, initiatives, and goals in OHS and Pilot Assistance. They also offer support to ALPA ASO pilot representatives on relevant internal and external committees and may assist in organizing meetings between ALPA and industry/government stakeholders concerning their assigned work.

    Travel: 5 – 20%

    ALPA is a member-driven, staff supported union comprised of two internal professional unions.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Bachelor's degree in a relevant area, Occupational Health and Safety or a related discipline, from an accredited college or university required; or equivalent combination of education and practical aeronautical experience; advanced degree preferred.
    • BCRSP recognized certification in Occupational Health and Safety Training with extensive knowledge and experience in Occupational Health & Safety issues required.
    • Thorough understanding of OH&S laws, practices, and relevant regulations for Canada and its provinces and territories strongly preferred.
    • Five (5) years of progressive experience in similar roles required, ten (10) or more strongly preferred.
    • Knowledge of the aviation industry, the commercial piloting profession, or equivalent required.
    • Understanding of various legislative processes, Canada Labour Code-Part II, Occupational Health and Safety, Aviation Occupational Safety and Health, Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs), and the like, required.
    • Knowledge of government and regulatory affairs is beneficial.
    • Ability to conduct Occupational Health & Safety research, communicate complex technical issues in a simple way, and make presentations to staff and committee representatives.
    • Strong collaboration and teamwork skills.
    • Strong time management skills; able to work in a deadline-oriented environment and transition between projects smoothly.
    • Solid conflict resolution, problem solving, negotiation, and mediation skills.
    • Solid technical writing and public speaking skills required.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written, for effective interaction with internal staff, pilots, and external contacts.
    • Software proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

    Consistently operates a computer/smartphone/tablet. Regularly required to maintain a stationary position, move within the office and the local area, converse with others, and exchange accurate information.

    Regularly required to sit, stand, bend, reach, and move within the office and for travel. May occasionally include bending, stooping, squatting, and/or moving items.

    Occasionally required to move, raise, reach, and retrieve items up to ten (10) pounds. While traveling, may be responsible for handling luggage weighing up to 50 lbs.

    ALPA offers competitive salaries with enhanced benefits, including:

    • 27 days paid vacation and holidays per year plus 2 volunteer days annually;

    PROJECTED ANNUAL SALARY RANGE: CAD $126,207.00 – CAD $180,293.00
