Essential Functions

  • Support aquatics supervisor in recruiting, hiring, training, coaching, all swim instructor staff and volunteers.
  • Builds a high functioning swim instructor team. Ensure swim instructors understand role expectations, receive regular feedback/appreciation and work together to support each other. Support Supervisor in delivery of critical messages to swim instructor team.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with volunteers, members, program participants, and colleagues at all levels of the organization; helps participants and families connect with each other and the YMCA; and encourages parent or caregiver involvement.
  • Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers program participants and families to other programs.
  • Knows and reviews all emergency procedures, pool standards and best practices; responds to situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures; completes related reports or recommendations as required.
  • Ensures YMCA Aquatics SAM standards are consistently met or exceeded and supports the supervisor in responding to service issues with possible solutions in a timely manner.
  • Is an active ondeck mentor and swim instructor
  • Role models and consistently applies safety rules, policies, guidelines, in the aquatics area.
  • Continual ondeck (10%) and inwater coaching (80%) and training of swim instructor staff to meet scanning, health & safety, opportunities for growth, program quality improvement and YMCA Aquatics SAM standards.
  • Remains calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others.
  • Maintains accurate records as required by YMCA Standards.
  • Ensures aquatics programs are safe and high quality by continual inwater coaching and developing of relationships with staff, volunteers, participants and members.
  • Supports the department, branch and association in implementing and achieving goals.

What You'll Need for this Job

  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • Minimum 12 years' experience in a leadership capacity in an Aquatics environment.
  • University degree in Recreation, Physical Education, Education or related experience an asset.
  • Certifications: Standard First Aid & CPR-C, Lifesaving National Lifeguard (NL), Must hold one of YMCA Swim Instructor (YSI), Water Safety Instructor (WSI), OR Swim Instructor
  • Lifesaving (SI).
  • Obtain Oxygen Administration (O2) with 6 months of hire date.
  • Must obtain Lifesaving Swim Instructor (LSI) within first year of hire date.
  • Lifesaving Supervisor Training, First Aid Instructor (FAI) or National Lifeguard Instructor (NLI) an asset
  • Aquatics Emergency Care (AEC) and National Coaching Certification (NCCP) are an asset.
  • Able to obtain a Police Information Check with Vulnerable sector check
  • Must obtain employer specific WHMIS and child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date
  • Ability to maintain certificationlevel currency without expiry, as well as physical and mental readiness.
