THE WESTSHORE


Bringing the last news and information to British Columbia's vibrant waterfront community is The Westshore, a twice-weekly community newsletter focused on delivering independent, local-first reporting and community updates on the stories that matter most to the residents who live there.


This is a remote position based in Victoria, BC, and more specifically in the Westshore.

In this role, you'll have the opportunity to:

  • Produce the twice-weekly newsletter, complete with local news, council coverage, local businesses, events, and community profiles
  • Write web articles on a weekly basis for both The Westshore and Capital Daily
  • Maintain high quality copy across formats, following inhouse style
  • Follow journalistic standards and practices as laid out by CAJ
  • Multimedia duties as needed, such as photography, videography, and audio recording
  • Maintain a roster of local contacts and newsmakers
  • Editing duties as required
  • Conduct interviews and attend events, representing The Westshore
  • Work on long term/investigative stories as able
  • Attend story meetings
  • Help grow the publication to become a leading voice in the region
  • Increase credibility of the publication and organization through quality, trustworthy, and ethical work
  • Embrace and encourage a culture based on teamwork, creativity, and having fun

About you:


We are looking for a self-motivated individual who is passionate about community news, and can work in a fast paced, start-up environment.

Having the ability to wear multiple hats is important, as is a can-do attitude

  • You love newsletters, appreciating their audience engagement nuance and tactics, and have written them before even if it's just internal or a passion project
  • You have a ton of writing and editing experience with online publications. A little copywriting and marketing experience is a big plus
  • You know how to write in a way that gets readers past the headline a sense of humour and irreverence is a definite asset
  • You know the Westshore area of the South Island inside and out, and have an understanding of the local news, politics, arts, culture, business, and media landscape, and you know where people hang out and converse online
  • You bring a growth mindset, with a commitment to continuous improvement
  • You have excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • You're able to meet deadlines and handle multiple projects at a time
  • You have supported or worked in a newsroom before
  • You have an interest in escaping traditional media models, with a desire to explore new story formats and create incredible content with a talented team alongside you
  • You have a team player mentality. Each member of our team has the same goal, and working together is integral to achieving it
  • You want to have fun, and showcase what Victoria is all about
