Job Summary


The Supervisor, Bridges and Structures is responsible for leading a team of employees and external contractors mandated with the construction, modification, and repair of railway structures across a designated territory.

The incumbent is assigned a designated territory and periodically covers it based on business needs.


Main Responsibilities
Operations

  • Lead the engineering operations related to construction, modification and inspection of bridges and structures, and repair of railway structures
  • Oversee and plan engineering operations, which includes compliance with safe work procedures, Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) guidelines, and CN's policies and procedures
  • Control budgets and workforce productivity within CN's policies
  • Communicate bridge and structure conditions, daily production, and inform senior management
  • Execute longterm maintenance plans for bridges and structures
Staff Management

  • Supervise and direct activities of unionized employees and external contractors to ensure performance targets are met and safety is sustained
  • Provide coaching and guidance to employees through regular monitoring of employee performance
Derailments and Prevention

  • Participate in activities related to derailments and disruptions in service, while working with Transportation and Mechanical to establish cause and future prevention
  • Participate in investigations
  • Ensure safe work procedures and policies
Working Conditions

The role is performed indoors and outdoors in various types of weather and environmental conditions including remote locations. Work shifts may vary and will include weekdays, weekends, and holidays. The role requires being available on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidences.

Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress.

The role requires travel an average of 50% without advance notice, which will include overnight stays away from home.

The incumbent must meet all medical fitness in order to work at heights and have the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.


Requirements:

Experience


Bridges and Structures

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a directly related role
  • Experience in safety compliance
  • Experience working with or around heavy equipment, cranes, loaders, excavators, hydraulic tools and pneumatic tools
  • Experience in the maintenance and construction of concrete, steel, and wood structures (railway experience)


  • Experience overseeing budgets

  • Experience in supervising a unionized workforce
  • Experience in labour relations (e.g., interpretation of collective agreements, response to grievances, negotiations with union representatives, discipline)
  • Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset
Education/Certification/Designation

  • High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED)
  • Valid Driver's Licence
  • Ability to obtain Qualification Standards for Operating Crews (QSOC) certification
  • Postsecondary education, Civil Technologist in Structures
  • Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset

Technical Skills/Knowledge

  • Knowledge of Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR)
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Systems, Applications and Products (SAP), Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Microsoft Project
  • Excellent English verbal, reading comprehension and writing skills
