General Accountability


Reporting to the Director, Engineering Services, the Manager, Vehicle Programs RAMS has responsibility for managing, planning, directing, staffing, controlling and organizing the activities of the RAMS unit in the Engineering Services group, with due regard for operational efficiency and cost effectiveness.

This work includes providing either general administrative or specific technical guidance to Engineering staff charged with support of vehicles and related equipment.

This position requires the incumbent to be available to provide support and guidance to maintenance staff on a 24-hour basis as required.

Key Job Functions


Participating in the development of annual Goals and Objectives, appropriate operating and maintenance of an efficient organizational structure to implement the aforementioned in the RAMS group.

Ensuring timely reporting of financial and performance results, including any significant safety, security, cost, human resources or other engineering issues to the Director, Engineering Services, or other Senior Managers as appropriate.

Making responsible and technically sound Engineering decisions regarding broadly stated objectives, soundness of work methods and approach, and policy adherence; keeping abreast of industry activities and technological developments related to area of responsibility.

Designing and introducing Engineered solutions to be incorporated in new vehicle specification and vehicle rebuild scope and procedures.

Reviewing performance records of vehicle equipment with respect to reliability, maintenance, cost, etc., and conducting tests as necessary to recommend changes to existing vehicles and/or future procurement.

Establishing Engineering drawing standards and procedures, ensuring adherence of implementation to design; participating in the assessment of the condition of vehicles, directing engineering efforts and managing major system replacement programs with respect to repair, maintenance, and overhaul of rail vehicles.

Directing vehicle acceptance programs and participating in design review, testing, commissioning and inspection activities.
Designing Engineered solutions to address vehicle and sub-system equipment problems.

Ensuring the security and maintenance of a technical library and records as related to TTC's vehicles and an Engineering laboratory as related to component validation, quality control and prototyping.

Ensuring the timely preparation, distribution and update of vehicle overhaul and parts manuals and drawings.

Ensuring accountability at management and professional levels, development of technical and supervisory competence and participation in the succession planning process for the RAMS section; providing Engineering stamp approval (PEO) as required.

Substituting for the Director, Engineering Services in his/her absence.

Responsible for treating passengers and/or employees with respect and dignity and ensuring the needs of passengers or employees with disabilities are accommodated and/or addressed (within their area of responsibility) in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders so that can fully benefit from the TTC as a service-provider and an employer.

Education and Experience


Completion of University Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, combined with several years of directly related engineering experience working with transportation or transit vehicles.

Registration as a licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario is mandatory.
