  • Have delegated authority from the City Manager to review and render decisions on Lot Grading Plans
  • Problem resolution balancing and resolving a range of often conflicting interests and goals (i.e. City interests, interests of the public, and of applicants). This includes negotiating with applicants to achieve City policies and objectives resulting in improved lot grading outcomes
  • Liaise with and coordinate reviews with other City departments and outside agencies
  • Utilize knowledge of engineering principles and the Drainage Bylaw to respond to telephone inquiries regarding grading concepts, regulations, techniques, drainage complaints, failed Lot Grading Plan submissions, and potential solutions
  • Participate in program development work, including related projects and tasks that support the Lot Grading unit to improve its practices, procedures, and other continuous improvement initiatives
  • Issue deadlines for compliance with the Drainage Bylaw and use discretion to extend deadlines when warranted

Qualifications:


  • Completion of a two (2) year diploma in an appropriate Engineering technological program
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience directly related to drainage including engineering surveying, landscaping, surface runoff, directly resolving issues with contractors, developers and the general public
  • Membership or eligibility to be recognized as a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) with ASET
  • A Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's License is required
  • Knowledge of Civil Engineering principles, surveying, grading, slopes, lot grading guidelines and the Drainage Bylaw
  • Considerable knowledge of the engineering terminology and techniques related to the work assigned
  • Ability to meet and deal effectively with contractors, developers and the general public, and to enforce rules and regulations with firmness, impartiality and good judgment
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with preciseness and accuracy
  • Ability to operate instruments and equipment related to the work assignments
  • Ability to read and interpret advanced plans, specifications, diagrams and charts of a complex technical nature
  • Physical ability to perform outside work in all types of weather and areas related to the work assignments
  • Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) security clearance that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and is a requirement of this position, there may be a cost associated with this requirement

Hours of Work: 33.75 hours per week, Monday - Friday
The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time.

Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
