Duties:

Accountable to the Director, Energy Markets, or Director, Market Supply & Data, the Market Analyst participates in a wide variety of market research, monitoring, and regulatory activities as they relate to current and future developments in Canadian and global energy markets.

Duties are normally undertaken in a collegial team environment with direction and coaching from more experienced staff, and include:

  • Researching and analysing Canadian energy markets, including energy production, consumption, prices, policies, and transportation, as well as important market events, and assessing implications for the CER and Canada.
  • Participating in consultations, conferences, and workshops on energy market matters with industry, government, and other stakeholders.
  • Contributing to projects led by senior staff to advise Commissioners, Board Members, CER executives, and government partners on current and future developments in energy markets.
  • Accessing, using and manipulating data to create energy information and analyse energy markets.
  • Assisting in the research and writing of internal and external reports, including energy information products, briefing notes, CER website updates, and presentations.
  • Managing research and/or analytical projects, including exploring gaps, problems and drivers of change that affect the CER and its Energy Information Program; develops, recommends and implements solutions.

Education:

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with a specialization in economics, engineering, science, commerce, or other field of study related to the position.

Degree equivalency


Experience:

E1.

Experience in conducting quantitative analysis on energy-related matters (e.g., on topics such as natural gas, electricity, natural gas liquids, crude oil, energy prices, energy production, energy consumption, and energy transportation).

E2. Experience presenting analysis and recommendations orally and in a variety of written formats, including through visuals.

Asset Qualifications:

Qualifications that are not essential to perform the work, but that would benefit the organization or enhance the work to be performed currently or in the future.

AQ1.

Post graduate degree from a recognized university or a professional designation (e.g., Chartered Financial Analyst) related to the duties of the position.

AQ2. Experience in using programming languages such as VBA, SQL, Python, and R.
