The Independence Program is an immersive residential life skills program that assists youth with disabilities to develop the skills they need to participate in the adult world as they transition to post-secondary education, employment or independent/supported living. Holland Bloorview has developed this opportunity to allow young people with disabilities to acquire life experiences that encourage self-expression, skill-development, and independence, while promoting friendship and enjoyment. The program operates from Toronto Student Residence - Seneca College, Newnham Campus. It is an experience based program that requires the staff to work with an interprofessional team and support participants in the achievement of their identified goals. This will require actively supporting program participants in the workshop, community navigation and taking public transit. This position requires that staff are able to work evenings and weekends.


Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitates planning, implementation and evaluation of goaloriented therapeutic recreation programs for inpatients
  • Contributes directly to the continuum of rehabilitation therapeutic services in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team
  • Participate in team discussions around assessment, intervention planning and outcome monitoring.
  • Follows the Centre's philosophy regarding client and familycentred care
  • Provides a safe and age appropriate 'fun' atmosphere that fosters the development of leisure
  • Adheres to and ensures the maintenance of the Standards of Practice for Therapeutic Recreation Profession
  • Identifies learning needs and establishes goals
  • Identifies practice issues and participates in their resolution
  • Remains current with professional literature related to Therapeutic Recreation & Best Practice Evidence
  • Maintains flexible hours consistent with patient leisure needs (Saturdays or Sundays and evening hours may be required)
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives, supports the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment and advances a culture of client/patient safety through work and daily practices

Qualifications

  • College Diploma in Recreation Studies (i.e., Recreation & Leisure, recreation Leadership, etc.).
  • Maintains current certificate in Basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Life Saving Course (BCLS) and Standard First Aid
  • Member in good standing with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario
  • Experience working with children and adolescents with physical disabilities and their families is preferred
  • Experience planning and facilitating group recreational programs is essential
  • Proven ability to relate well to professionals, children, adolescents and family members
  • Ability to manage flexible working hours and fluctuating responsibilities
  • Proven ability to organize time, meet deadlines, and work independently
  • Ability to provide recreation programs that are safe, quality driven and engaging for patients
  • Must be available to work weekends
  • Previous experience supervising volunteers and students
