The Regulatory Compliance Specialist develops and implements an effective process for monitoring and validating regulatory compliance controls to enable senior compliance management to monitor, provide oversight and report on the overall state of regulatory compliance for the Company.

The incumbent is guided by defined goals and objectives under the general supervision of the Manager, Compliance in support of all business units.


What you'll be working on:


  • Provide compliance support to business units for compliance with federal and provincial legislation and external industry association guidelines using a risk based approach
  • Facilitates compliance risk assessment, development of compliance controls and testing of those controls across Empire Life, and communicates compliance testing results with business units
  • Advise on and monitor business unit remediation of compliance control weaknesses
  • Make recommendations to management regarding suitability of compliance controls within processes at Empire Life
  • Provide regular reporting on compliance matters, highlighting trends or issues in business units
  • Work with business unit compliance and members of Compliance on compliance issues and facilitate and provide updates to Compliance Management
  • Interpret and communicate legislative and industry requirements and guidelines to impacted stakeholders
  • Act as liaison with business units, external regulators, industry associations and other insurance companies on matters of compliance
  • Participate in special assignments and projects involving compliance and complex initiatives that present regulatory compliance risk

What you'll need to have:


  • Completion of a university degree
  • Minimum 5 year's relevant experience in the financial services/insurance/securities industry preferably with experience in a compliance, audit or risk management
  • Knowledge of insurance law and compliance requirements
  • Experience analysing, designing or monitoring controls
  • Welldeveloped research, analytical, problem solving and decisionmaking skills
  • Good communication, negotiation, persuasion and/or presentation skills
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of stakeholders and business units
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database software

It would be nice for you to have:

  • FLMI, AIRC, IAPP and ACAMS is an asset
  • Bilingual in French/English is an asset
