The Department of Cell & Systems Biology promotes research and teaching in some of the most dynamic and vital areas of biological research.

We facilitate the pursuit of cutting-edge research in the molecular life sciences and systems biology and embrace new methodologies and state-of-the-art technologies.

Located in downtown Toronto and part of the University of Toronto, one of the world's top research universities, our department is an ideal place to work, research and make a lasting impression in the field.


Under general supervision of the Chief Administration Officer (CAO), the incumbent works with the Chief Horticulturist on all aspects of the growth facilities operations.

This includes the planting and growing of plant materials for teaching and research needs, caring of plant collection, as well as maintaining the growth facilities operations (e.g. greenhouses, growth chambers, growth rooms and outdoor garden space).


The incumbent curates and maintains the teaching plant collection, assists in integrating pest management and updates the growth facilities webpage.

The incumbent also provides support for common garden and glasshouse projects at the Koffler Scientific Reserve (KSR) at Jokers Hill.


Your responsibilities will include:


  • Advising on best practices and procedures to plant and grow plants used in research
  • Establishing and maintaining a planting and fertilization schedule to ensure sufficient research and teaching material are available
  • Following rules and procedural instructions when implementing correct water schedules
  • Checking to ensure equipment is in working order
  • Troubleshooting and resolving routine issues
  • Making minor purchases
  • Recommending the purchase of equipment and supplies

Essential Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture, or a relevant field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum two (2) years of recent and related practical experience in horticulture. Experience in caring for plant collections and maintaining growth facilities and equipment (e.g. Environment Control Computers).
  • Experience in areas of greenhouse operations, plant pest and disease control and related horticultural topics is highly desirable.
  • Experience with botany, plant propagation and production, entomology, building mechanical systems, greenhouse, and growth chamber equipment, plant disease and modern pest control solutions, soils, fertilizers, and irrigation equipment.
  • Experience managing multiple and offsite facilities.
  • Excellent problem solving skills to assess plant health and respond to pest/disease outbreaks.
  • Demonstrated an understanding and knowledge with horticultural and scientific laboratory machinery, equipment, instruments and various greenhouse control software.
  • Working knowledge of horticultural environmental monitoring systems and alarms.
  • Working knowledge of computer software (e.g. Microsoft Office, WordPress and photo editing software).
  • Strong knowledge of growth facilities used for insect rearing (e.g. fruit fly drosophila, water striders, ambush bugs and others), aquatic invertebrates (e.g. daphnia, rotifers), algae, duck weed (e.g. Lemna).
  • Ability to foster positive relationships with various groups.
  • Ability to work under pressure and coordinate multiple growth facility users.
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Proficiency in MS Office.
  • Excellent recordkeeping skills and organizational skills.
