    Position Purpose Summary:

    The Custodian maintains the cleanliness of the facility, property and or grounds in compliance with applicable standards. The incumbent makes minor repairs and provides access to the facility as required.

    This is a casual on-call position with variable hours.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Cleaning:

  • Ensures the general upkeep of the facility such as cleaning floors, washrooms, windows, dusting, collects and disposes of garbage and recycling, vacuums
  • Checks, cleans, moves, arranges and dusts furniture as required
  • Ensures the general upkeep of external property such as mowing lawns, keeping sidewalks clear of snow and ice, cleaning main floor outside windows, picking up litter, sweeping sidewalks, gardening/watering and pruning shrubs, raking
  • Restocks washroom supplies and distributes received material as required
  • Spot washes accessible walls, strips and waxes floors and shampoos carpets as required
  • Arranges chairs for worship/meetings and stores chairs after worship/meetings
  • Open and close doors for rental groups and ensure the cleanliness of the building after events.
  • Maintenance:

  • Establishes and monitors preventative maintenance procedures for related equipment; recommends repairs and purchases as required
  • Performs several minor repairs and duties in a variety of trade areas such as electrical, carpentry, plumbing and painting; reports safety concerns and major repair issues (e.g. furniture and fixtures)
  • Checks doors and windows to ensure building and resident security; provides access to the facility and secures the facility as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

    *NOTE: You may be required to provide validated educational documentation.

    Education/Certifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Experience:

  • More than three months but less than one year of prior related experience, including life skills and general familiarity with cleaning and maintenance procedures
  • PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:

    Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • Respect and understanding of The Salvation Army - its mission, culture, and values
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to operate industrial cleaning equipment and tools, mopping/sweeping, bending/twisting/lifting, occasional ladder work and fine motor skills
  • Ability to use cleaning equipment such as vacuum cleaners, floor buffers, and cleaning compounds
  • Moderate to high attention when using motorized equipment, handling hazardous chemicals, and using nonmotorized/general cleaning equipment
  • Knowledge of standard cleaning procedures
  • Background in handling, mixing and safely using cleaning chemicals
  • A strong sense of initiative and responsibility in working alone
  • Problem solving and decision-making skills
  • General knowledge of workplace safety practices, policies, and procedures (e.g., equipment safety, hazard communication, personal protective equipment use) to ensure performance of safe work practices.
  • Required to lift more than 20 pounds
