Milner Group is seeking a full time Estimator to join our growing company, as a key member of our dynamic management team.

Prepare civil cost estimates for various construction projects, to aid management in bidding on and/or determining price of service. Provide leadership and oversight of secured projects. Although our head office is in Nanaimo, travelling to various job sites within Vancouver Island will be required.


Responsibilities & Duties

  • Consult with clients, vendors, personnel in other departments as well as construction supervision to discuss and formulate estimates and resolve issues if they arise
  • Analyze blueprints, construction drawings and other documentation to prepare time, cost, materials, and labor estimates
  • Prepare estimates for use in selecting vendors or subcontractors
  • Consult with engineers, designers, owners, contractors and subcontractors on changes and adjustments to cost estimates
  • Prepare estimates to be used by management for purposes such as planning, organizing, and scheduling work
  • Prepare cost and expenditure statements and other necessary documentation at regular intervals for the duration of the project with assistance from accounting department
  • Assess cost effectiveness of products, projects or services, tracking actual costs relative to bids as the project develops
  • Review material and labor requirements to decide whether it is more costeffective to construct or subcontract components of a project
  • Prepare and maintain a directory of suppliers, contractors and subcontractors
  • Establish and maintain tendering process, and conduct negotiations

Required Skills:


  • Previous estimating experience preferred 3 to 5 years
  • Ability to ready and interpret civil construction drawings and perform a full material take off
  • Critical thinking
  • Strong communication at multiple levels of an organization
  • Decision making based on both creative and logical thinking
  • Resource management
  • Problem solving
  • Experience with Microsoft Office to assist with bidding and administration of projects
  • Knowledge and experience working with Adobe, Auto CAD and/or Bluebeam is preferred
