Purpose of Role:

Weir Marine Engineering (WME), located in Montreal (LaSalle), QC, has a requirement for a Team Leader for the Customer Service Desk (CSD) team.

Unique to our environment is that the "customers" are all IT professionals in our organization who develop and test systems and configurations for the Royal Canadian Navy as part of our long-term contract to manage and operate the Naval Engineering Test Establishment (NETE).

This dynamic role encompasses hands-on technical work, administering processes, supporting planning efforts and supervising several team members. The nature of this permanent, full-time position is that much of the work has to be done on-site in our office area and in datacenter-like equipment rooms, but there is the possibility of teleworking for 1-2 days per week

Key Responsibilities:

  • Daytoday Operational Health of all IT Environments: The CSD team supports, maintains and administers an IT lab network, many complex IT test environments, an IT production environment and all of the IT equipment, racking infrastructure and structured cabling that encompass and support those systems. The team also performs IT equipment racking, staging, cabling and wiring for new environments and systems in accordance with industry best practices and internal standards. Current baseline is ~30 fullheight equipment racks in three spaces, expected to grow to ~45 racks within the next two years;
  • Configuration and

Asset Management:
The CSD team is responsible for IT asset management (including the upkeep of an asset database), inventory and configuration audits, and for creating and maintaining physical and logical diagrams of information systems, rack layouts and cabling diagrams, and processes and procedures;- Stakeholder Engagement and

Strategic Planning:

Interacting and collaborating with "customers"/IT professionals and other Team/Group Leaders on a frequent basis about day-to-day activities, priorities, processes and future needs.

Includes managing the security posture of the lab network and planning for changes/improvements; planning to address obsolescence / life-cycle management of equipment and software; and planning for new capabilities and capability upgrades;- Hands-on

Team Leader:
Lead the team and share the workload with the team members.

Encompasses supervisory responsibilities for the team members (currently two experienced personnel, with a likelihood of adding another position in the next year or so), including coordination/work allocation, development, objectives setting and performance review, and support to recruiting when needed; and- Safety First: Demonstrate 100% commitment to our zero harm behaviors in support of our drive towards developing a world class safety culture.


Job Knowledge/Education and Qualifications:

  • Ten or more years of relevant IT technical experience, with minimum three years of supervisory experience in an IT environment and role is mandatory. Relevant certifications (e.g. A+, Network+, Internet+, CCNA, BICSI, etc.)
are highly desirable;- Strong understanding of IT Service Management (ITSM) concepts, strong trouble-shooting and fault-finding skills (root cause analysis), excellent interpersonal and customer service skills and strong English written and oral communication abilities;- Knowledge of the implementation, use and support of key technologies:

  • IT server, storage and networking equipment and hardware (HP, Dell, Cisco, Riverbed, Palo Alto, Aruba, EMC, Raritan, Eaton, APC, and others)-
  • Structured cabling (fibre optic cabling, termination and modes, CATx, serial RS232/EIA530, etc.);-
  • UPS, electrical and power systems;-
