Lab Summary:


Samsung AI Research Centre in Toronto located next to the University of Toronto campus, was launched in 2018 and is headed by Professor Sven Dickinson, an expert in computer vision and former chair of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Toronto.

The Toronto AI Center (AIC) is a key part of Samsung's global AI Research efforts, that aim to conduct mid
- to long-term research with potential for direct impact on future Samsung products reaching hundreds of millions of users worldwide. Our vision at the Toronto AIC is to have a very broad spectrum of AI researchers spanning computer vision, computational linguistics, machine learning, knowledge representation and reasoning, mobile and distributed intelligence. As a research lab, our mission is to pursue scientific research, to publish in the most elite venues, and to help channel the research into Samsung products.


Position Summary:

Project overview:

AI image quality is a high priority for Samsung.

Several projects at the Toronto AIC are focused on improving image quality in challenging scenarios, including low-light and nighttime photography.

The primary hardware responsible for in-camera processing is known as an image signal processor (ISP).

Our team at the Toronto AIC is focused on all aspects of ISP performance, from full software-based ISP emulation, to data augmentation and synthesis for training deep-learning ISP components.

This is a great opportunity to learn how your smartphone camera really works and contribute to improving imaging for millions of users.

Another project explores digital zoom. More specifically, we are interested in generating a high-quality high-resolution image from one or more low quality low-resolution images.

Since both the sensor and lens on a mobile phone are small, digital zoom is essential to achieve high zoom factors.

We are using modern image synthesis tools (deep learning, GANs, diffusion models) to achieve high perceptual quality of the output while keeping an eye on maintaining efficiency.

This position will be performed in an office setting.

The position will require the incumbent to sit and stand at a desk, communicate in person and by telephone, and frequently operate standard office equipment, such as telephones and computers.
