Summary of Duties:


Reporting to the Manager, Aquatic Programming and Leadership, the Supervisor, Aquatics develops, implements, coordinates and supports quality aquatic programs and activities that meet the diverse needs of the public while maintaining the highest standards of safety and customer service.


Work Performed:


  • Responsible for supervising employees including hiring, administration, training and performance aspects of reporting employees. Respond to and refer sensitive and confidential human resource issues as required.
  • Provide leadership in the execution and delivery of services and programs in the following areas of accountability:
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and revise aquatics and related programs. Liaise and collaborate with stakeholder partners on programs of mutual interest.
  • Promote community development and relations by arranging and hosting public meetings, conducting surveys and liaising with community agencies.
  • Liaise and provide consultation to community groups with aquatic sport, recreation or leadership interests.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of policies and procedures in response to increased risk, legislation and program requirements.
  • Assess issues of risk within the Unit jurisdiction and make recommendations for resolution.
  • Liaise with People Services to develop, implement, monitor and revise Corporate First Aid and defibrillation programs.
  • Ensure adherence of aquatic staff and the public to relevant government, corporate and Departmental codes, legislation, policies and procedures.
  • Assist the Manager, Aquatic Programming and Leadership with the planning and implementation of Capital Projects with respect to health and safety, risk management and program design and delivery.
  • Prepare reports for consideration by the Manager, Aquatic Programming and Leadership regarding operations and strategic directions.
  • Encourage and support employee participation and commitment to divisional and organizational objectives. Actively mentor, provide development opportunities and build team performance with direct reports.
  • Demonstrate commitment to supporting antiracism, antioppression, and human rights through interactions with community partners, employees and individuals and promote programs and initiatives that reflect this commitment.
  • Demonstrate commitment and adherence to Health and Safety legislation and programs; actively promote a culture of safety.
  • Track performance measures for Unit deliverables using appropriate data collection and analytics.
  • Fairly and consistently administer provisions of various collective agreements.
  • Build and encourage employee commitment to a high level of performance in all areas of customer service, employee safety and service delivery of individual goals and objectives.
  • Participate as directed on City of London and partner organization committees and teams.
  • Develop and recommend budget and initiate actions to operate within fiscal plans. Monitor and report as required.
  • Address escalated customer service and program issues.
  • Respond to emergencies on an immediate and oncall basis.
  • Perform administrative duties in the absence of other management staff.
  • Undertake special project assignments identified in the strategic plan for the Service Area.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Experience:


  • Graduate of a university or twoyear Community College program in recreation or related field; or equivalent combination of education and related professional and lived community experience.
  • Three years related experience including team leadership or supervisory responsibilities.

Specialized Training & Licenses:


  • Hold current, at least one of the following certifications or equivalent: National Lifeguard Service Instructor, Red Cross Water Safety Instructor-Trainer, Royal Lifesaving Society of Canada Instructor-Trainer, Standard First Aid Instructor, AED/Airway Instructor.
  • Hold or have held certification as a Canadian Red Cross\Royal Lifesaving Society Water Safety Instructor, Standard First Aid, Basic Rescuer C.P.R. and National Lifeguard Service Pool Option and demonstrate current equivalent technical knowledge of these award contents.

Skills and abilities in the following areas are necessary:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the above identified areas of accountability with an understanding of the Unit's programs and services.
  • Demonstrated success leading or supervising employees, contracted services and consultants.
  • Proven commitment to the safety of employees with knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable regulations as it relates to the position.
  • Ability to understand the importance of service delivery; develop and implement initiatives that support customers in a timely and effective way.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal and customer services skills, including conflict resolution and problem solving; demo
